Epicuro Aglianico Beneventano 2008

Member Review by skilz:

Cousin brought it to a party. I never had Aglianico before. On the nose, I got dark fruit and a subtle hint of floral essence. I was not sure what to make of it as I usually smell floral on white wines. On the palate, the tannins were pronounced initially but mellowed down after a few minutes of breathing. The wine is not very fruit forward and more of an elegant style. Big but not too bold. Well balanced after decanting. At $5, a very good deal and one of the best italians at this price point.

A steal at $5 a bottle from Trader Joe's. I tend to prefer very fruit forward reds and this one is NOT that at all - when first opened, it was rough and almost dirty tasting, with strong tannins and a sort of leather-tobacco bitterness. It improved and softened a bit as it breathed, and now drinking a glass the next day I taste a lot more fruit, although it's still dry and tannic. Still, an interesting wine that paired REALLY well with the lasagne bolognese we had for dinner.
