Eos Zinfandel 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Vintage was a great year filled with unexpected turns in the weather. Starting with light rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures winemakers were beginning to think harvest was going to be low yielding and late. With the heat during August and September being consistent, the early ripening varietals endured the warm days and the cool nights, perfect for ripening grapes. An on-time and balanced harvest created Zinfandel with bright fruit characters and great floral aromatics.

Originally named for the Goddess of the Dawn in ancient Greek mythology, Eos Estate Winery uses state-of-the-art, eco-friendly technology to harness the sun’s energy to craft premium wines. Visits to the spacious, Italianate hospitality center, perched on a hilltop amid rose gardens in the heart of Paso Robles wine country, blend wine tasting with solar-powered farming and winemaking operations. In 2008, Eos launched a $5 million project to install a cutting-edge solar system to power the winery and tasting room operations. More than two acres of ground-mounted tracking solar arrays now supply all electrical power for the winery and tasting room, and additional roof-mounted solar arrays provide all water-heating needs. Eos is the largest winery on California's Central Coast to run completely on alternative energy. Guided tours of the solar power system are available to visitors upon request. Other investments have resulted in extensive winery improvements, including a super-high-tech wine lab, and the replanting of several vineyard blocks. We also recruited a new Director of Winemaking, Nathan Carlson, lured by our commitment to sustainable agriculture and the use of solar energy to provide energy needs. A native of rural Minnesota and a key member of winemaking teams in Central California and Oregon's Dundee Hills, Carlson has more than a decade of winemaking experience, and is known as an expert in regional climate and weather patterns. A cypress-lined drive leads up to the hospitality center, where visitors can taste their way through a complimentary flight of wines. Eos encourages guests to sit outdoors amid the lush gardens, shaded by palm, olive, and oak trees, and enjoy the scenic views of the sun-splashed vineyards and rolling hills of this eco-friendly estate. Tastings: Reserve tasting $10.00, Estate tasting $5.00 The Wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Late Harvest Moscato, Malbec, Merlot, Muscat Canelli, Petite Sirah, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Zinfandel Port Specialty: Estate-grown, block-designate Petite Sirah Of Special Note: Picnic area. The color of this wine is the color that you would get if you squeezed a red watermelon slice and pomegranite juice together. It looked beautiful in the Ventura county sun and as I smelled it smelled like limestone, earth dust, old plum, cinammon cereal flakes with raspberry and sage. On the tongue it was well rounded, plummy with a sense of melting Godiva dark chocolate swooshing around my mouth with plum, dark raspberry juice . It has a medium earthy finish tangled with white pepper and hints of oak. I am enjoying this wine in my hotel room and I believe ths can be enjoyed anytime so give it a whirl.

14.9% Petite Sirah Scents of caramel and beer. Powdery dry, tart cherry flavor; has a smoky finish.

Warm cinammon nose with rhubarb and christmas spices. Blueberry, mint and eucalyptus. Ginger and anise on the finish

This isn't a bad wine but it isn't a Paso Zin either. It lacked body, and that big bold fruit that comes from the hot Paso sun. Given all of the great Zin's in California I wouldn't recommend this one.

Tasting Notes:

NOSE: The 2007 Zinfandel aromas fill the senses with the fruit of plum and dark berry pie with graham cracker crust. MOUTH: The aromas carry over onto the palate and are balanced by the acidic fruits of black cherry, raspberry and strawberry. FINISH: This wine finishes out with floral aromatics, subtle hints of oak, dry dusty earth, fresh tobacco that lingers and spices of white pepper and sage.
