“G” is Chile’s only certified biodynamic wine, now in its second vintage. Alvaro Espinoza makes this syrah blend from Emiliana’s estate vineyard in eastern Colchagua. At three years of age, this is still extremely youthful, with wild black fruit, sweet spice and chocolatey tannins. The wine is so powerful that it remains impenetrable hours after the bottle is first opened. Cellar it for five years or more to let the forceful structure relax. It should age with grace.
Impressively rich, with loads of blueberry compote, braised fig, graphite and roasted earth notes waiting to emerge fully from behind the wall of dark, spice-laden toast. There’s great buried acidity and a long, grip-filled finish. Loaded with character, this is built for the cellar. Syrah, Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2010 through 2013.
Deep ruby. Seductively perfumed aromas of dark cherry, black currant, licorice and mocha. Fleshy dark berry flavors are framed by velvety tannins and pick up zestier red fruit character with air. The tannins build on the finish, which is impressively sweet and persistent. I’d stash this infant away for at least another five years. This Demeter-certified wine was made from biodynamically grown grapes, with the consultation of Alvaro Epinoza, owner of Antiyal.
All signs point in one direction: the top of the heap. this is one great Chilean red blend! With Syrah, Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the mix, Gê sets a new benchmark for multigrape blends from Chile. This wine is loaded with berry, cassis and black plum flavors, but it’s textured, balanced and alluring. There’s a bit of creaminess on the finish to offset any tannic bite that’s still holding on, but as a whole it’s delicious, generous and ready to go. Best now through 2011.
Restrained, elegant notes of dark red fruits, chocolate, tar and cedar. Harmonious, with sophisticated structure and long complex finish.
The 2006 GE is 30% Syrah, 30% Carmenere, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Merlot. It was produced from biodynamically farmed grapes from the winery’s Los Robles estate. Purple-colored, it has an alluring nose of pain grille, scorched earth, spice box, black currant, blackberry, and blueberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied wine with layers of savory flavor, succulent fruit, and enough structure to evolve for 3–4 years. With excellent concentration, depth, and balance, it should drink well from 2012 to 2020.
Rafael and José Guilisasti were visionaries in the late 1990s when they saw that the market was beginning to change and that consumers worldwide were becoming more aware of the products they were consuming, not only for health reasons, but also with respect to their social and environmental impact. They therefore asked winemaking consultant Alvaro Espinoza to join them in the process of converting a conventional Chilean winery into one that was 100% organic and biodynamic with the firm objective of creating wines of the highest quality with great respect for nature. Now, after more than a decade, what began as a dream has become a complete portfolio of wines backed by major national and international awards and recognition and that meet the new need of today’s consumers. Emiliana Gê presents an intense violet-tinged, plum-red color. The elegant nose expresses a wonderful harmony of ripe black fruit, black currant, berries, and forest fruits delicately melded with the oak, which lends soft mineral notes, toffee, and chocolate. The palate features soft, well-rounded tannins, and a long finish full of character and personality. The loaded character of this wine makes it one to definitely keep in the cellar for a few years. This wine is ideal to pair with hearty meals, so try with grilled or roasted red meats, game birds or rich stews.
