Elyse Zinfandel Sierra Foothills 1998

Translucent, purple color. Uh-oh, oxidized aroma is the first nose sensation. On the palate I do get some oxidized flavors and a lot of fruit--blackberries, prunes. With that profile there is definitely the sweet thing going on, here. Medium-bodied and no tannin to speak of. There was probably no reason to keep this wine so long. US$13.99 at Wine Club in Santa Ana in 2000.

The 2006 A.K.A. Zinfandel has intriguing aromas of wild berries, Asian spice, leather and hints of soy sauce that lead to explosive flavors of black raspberries, dark plums, blood oranges and suggestions of savory meats and earth. This heady wine is richly textured with intense fruit flavors, rich yet smooth tannins and a pleasantly long finish.
