Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Cogno's 2010 Barolo Ravera emerges from some of the oldest vineyards in the property. Dark red cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and smoke meld together in a sumptuous wine that impresses for its breadth and volume. At the same time, there is plenty of Ravera minerality supporting the fruit. The Ravera doesn't have the early appeal of the Cascina Nuova, rather it is a wine for the cellar. Hints of savory herb and floral notes with a faint suggestion of Chinato wrap around the finish...95" AG 01/14

Fabulous aromatics are precise and mineral with complicating notes of dried fungi, coffee, sweet red berries with a hint of blueberry, a hint of menthol, all in a fresh, tight, and complex package. Almost supple on entry before turning rich, bright and crystal clear on the palate with a hint of rose petals accenting the core of lightly candied black cherry and wild strawberry fruit. Perhaps not the most complex wine of the vintage, this is however texturally excellent with ripe tannins and integrated bright acids supporting the fruit and lending great snap on the backend before the tannins cut in. Crisp and fine grained. 92pts

Deep on the nose with hints of iron, fennel, a bit of herb, and a bit of wood here as well. Rather compact and cooler than the Cascina Nuova, soft and very approachable in the mouth with nice tannins supporting stony cherry pit fruit that shows nice detail and clarity in the mouth. The tannins here are well managed yet retain a nice touch of austerity lending this lovely depth on the backend with a deep stemmy, herbal incipient mushroom note. This is elegant and refined, in a pure and authentic Monforte style of Barolo. 93pts

Nebbiolo Prima - Elvio Ciogno Ravera Novello - nice sandalwood, rosehip accented toast wild cherry fruit, crisp, nice scale, not forced, a bit too wood tannin but fresh and clean with nice wild cherry fruit tones, refreshing and well balanced, good savory notes on the finish, nice wine, a touch simple but well put together. 7

AWE blind tasting - kind of sweet notes on the nose, some peach skin, minty fresh, earth and clay, a bit dilute, matte, anonymous, nice feel with a touch of chewy extraction, minty some nice cherry pit on the moderately long finish, 83-84

The 2008 Barolo Ravera bursts onto the palate with dark red fruit, cherries, mint, licorice and spices. It shows gorgeous fleshiness and depth for the year, with layers of dark red fruit that flow effortlessly to the long, resonant finish. The aromas and flavors meld together seamlessly as the wine sits in the glass. Knock-out floral aromatics linger on the impeccable, elegant finish. In 2008 the estate did not make their top Barolo, the Vigna Elena, because of hail in that site. The best fruit from that site went into the straight Ravera bottling. This is a dazzling effort from Cogno. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. - Robert Parker 94+ Points (bottled two weeks before my visit): Good bright red. Lovely ethereal perfume of exotic fruits, peach, orange, flowers and medicinal herbs, plus a whiff of Barolo Chinato. Silky on entry, then sweet, juicy and perfumed in the middle, with flavors similar to the aromas. Saturates the palate without any impression of ...

The 2006 Barolo Ravera is darker, richer and more sensual than the Cascina Nuova. Layers of dark fruit intermingled with sweet balsamic nuances of cloves, pine and menthol flow effortlessly from the Ravera. The richness of the density matches the tannins step by step all the way through to a sensual, inviting finish that begs for another taste. This, too, is a superb effort. Ravera isn't usually considered one of the very finest sites for Nebbiolo in Barolo, but in Cogno's hands the fruit seems to reach an unprecedented level of finesse and elegance.
