Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 2009
Sliced plums with hints of pomegranate on the nose. Full body, with beautiful depth of fruit and polished tannins. Flavors of chocolate, berry and flowers. Cogno makes refined and stylish Barolos. Better in 2015...93" JS 7/13 "Cogno’s 2009 Barolo Ravera shows a steady delivery of black fruit, leather, anise, black cherry, licorice and white truffle. Like the Barolo Cascina Nuova the aromas are not quite as focused as they could be. The wine shows a solid grip in the mouth with tightly woven tannins folded within its texture. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025...91" WA 6/13 "A visit to the cellars of Elvio Cogno is always a fascinating learning experience. I had my first taste of a beautifully fresh and fragrant white wine made with the Nascetta grape here a few years ago. The variety was new to many of us then, but thanks to vintner Valter Fissore and his wife Nadia Cogno it is strongly identified with the territory today. More recently, the couple started to produce limited cases of Barbera d’Alba made from pre-phylloxera vines (most more than a century old). That they were able to tap into that ancient genetic patrimony in this well-trodden part of Italy is something of a small miracle. They are also credited with putting the little-known Novello township on the Barolo map.
Editorial Reviews for Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera
Deep on the nose with hints of iron, fennel, a bit of herb, and a bit of wood here as well. Rather compact and cooler than the Cascina Nuova, soft and very approachable in the mouth with nice tannins supporting stony cherry pit fruit that shows nice detail and clarity in the mouth. The tannins here are well managed yet retain a nice touch of austerity lending this lovely depth on the backend with a deep stemmy, herbal incipient mushroom note. This is elegant and refined, in a pure and authentic Monforte style of Barolo. 93pts
