Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice 2008

A wine with blueberry, chocolate, cedar and cacao. Full body, with velvety tannins and a juicy, fruity and fresh finish. Needs three to four years to soften. Cogno makes rich yet refined wines. A beauty. Better after 2016...93" JS 7/13 "The 2008 Barolo Bricco Pernice brings us back to a cooler vintage and a more humid growing season. Tertiary aromas of cured meat, dried tobacco and button mushroom are beginning to show, and they add a lovely edge to this fabulous wine. At the back are brightly polished tones of cassis and dried fruit that give the wine the softness and the plushness it needs. The wine paints a pretty portrait of the harvest. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025...93" WA 6/13 "A visit to the cellars of Elvio Cogno is always a fascinating learning experience. I had my first taste of a beautifully fresh and fragrant white wine made with the Nascetta grape here a few years ago. The variety was new to many of us then, but thanks to vintner Valter Fissore and his wife Nadia Cogno it is strongly identified with the territory today. More recently, the couple started to produce limited cases of Barbera d’Alba made from pre-phylloxera vines (most more than a century old). That they were able to tap into that ancient genetic patrimony in this well-trodden part of Italy is something of a small miracle. They are also credited with putting the little-known Novello township on the Barolo map.

Our History The Elvio Cogno winery sits on the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont, one of the eleven communes in which Barolo is produced. Our History The Elvio Cogno winery sits on the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont, one of the eleven communes in which Barolo is produced. The cellar is housed in an 18th-century manor farm surrounded by 11 hectares of land, all occupied by vineyards. After a long and fruitful partnership with Marcarini at La Morra, in 1990 Cogno bought a splendid historical farm in the family village and restored it to its former glory. Today the winery nestles in a breathtaking landscape between the hills and the sky. At sunset on clear days, a wonderful turquoise horizon frames the farm like a painting. Hence the name of this exceptional wine land: ‘Petorchino’, or blue feet. The Cogno family has been making wine in the Langhe area for four generations: the values of history and tradition handed down by father Elvio are enhanced by the freshness and innovation introduced by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore. Sweetly fruited and bursting with aromas of rose hips, rose petals, just a fine edge of attractive jamminess, nice gentle spice, and hints of tar and licorice. Finely balanced on the palate with well managed tannins that are present, if not prominent, this shows a really lovely core of red fruit, that is rich, ripe and transparent, with lovely tannins and perfectly balanced supporting acidity. The finish is just a touch short but I expect it will lengthen with time. A great showing. 93pts

A fairly big confiture nose of red and dark fruit with a hint of plumminess that turns a bit smoky, deep,  and soil driven with air showing lots of tobacco and cherry in alcohol, and a little mint. On entry this is  a little chewy and powerful, with an elegance to the tannins, but lots of power, packed  tight with fine grained tannins that supports black licorice and black cherry fruit on the mid palate and through the nice powerful finish. 92pts
