When we recently tasted our way through Oregon, the Roosevelt stood out among its high-end peers. The bouquet is lovely, and the mouthfeel, the balance, the structure, and the finish are as good as any we tasted. The red fruit plays against orange peel in a feminine style with a long finish. Costly, maybe, but worth it!

The 2008 Pinot Noir Five Mountain is sourced from a vineyard planted by the Ponzi family in the 1970s and subsequently purchased by Elk cove. Medium ruby red, it gives up an enticing perfume of cedar, spice box, incense, and red cherry. Made in a round, forward, good balance, and a medium-long finish. Drink it over the next 6-8 years.

Vivid red. Sexy, expressive bouquet of raspberry and cherry-cola, potpourri and minerals, plus a touch of smokiness. Silky and precise on the palate, with very good depth but no excess fat to its red fruit flavors. Shows very good clarity on the finish, which lingers with suave floral and spice notes. This is drinkable now but has the depth and balance to age.

Tight, focused and minerally, with a stony component to the dark berry and spice flavors, all floating over a light, transparent structure. Not tough, but needs time to resolve the tightness. Best from 2012 through 2018.

Deep red with a bright rim. Sexy black raspberry and floral aromas are complemented by notes of spicecake and incense, plus a hint of musky herbs. Supple, palate-coating red and dark berry flavors show excellent depth without any excess fat. The juicy dark berry note repeats on the finish, which also offers hints of cola and smoky Indian spices. There's lots going on already but I'd stash this wine away for another few years.
