Editorial Reviews for Elk Cove Pn
Deep fruit, dark cherry with mint, dark herb, green spice and tea notes. Has a little Burgundian funkiness going on with a nice note of peppercorns and grilled, rare beef. Very clean, precise with modest but lovely crisp tannins, solid acidity is refreshing, red cherry fruit is fresh and crisp with a touch of that green spice up front then tea and earth on the midpalate. Medium bodied but very fine and layered with an absolutely refreshing feel, lovely focus and a moderately long finish that ends with a flourish of fine spice tones. Elegant and complex. 91pts
Tasty wine! Nice balance and structure and a good spice profile. 93 pts. -Wine Spectator Grand Tour 5/5/12
This fresh red in inviting and invigorating for its juicy black currant, plum ... Drink now through 2019. -HS
Once again, the beauty of Oregon shines through on their Pinot Noirs, and the 2008 Elk Cove Vineyards Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is no exception! The wine itself had a rich ruby color, suggesting something a bit heavier for a Pinot, and suggesting this wine might be something special. The nose was quite earthy, with hints of cedar and the tiniest bit of leather, taking me back to my time living in the Pacific Northwest, the lovely rain forests, hiking near Mount Hood and tasting wine throughout the Willamette Valley. The wine itself had a complexity that defied its youth, fruit forward, with hints of plum and wild berry, balanced with hints of oak and cedar. With mild acidity and subtle tannins, this wine makes for a long, smooth finish. I would easily pair this wine with a variety of seafood dishes from the Pacific coast, but most of all, I can see this wine as a perfect complement to a cedar planked wild salmon at the peak of the season, with fresh steamed asparagus and couscous with toasted pine nuts. I would easily rate this wine an 4, and the fact that you can often find this wine on sale for under $20 makes it an even more impressive find!
Three and a half glasses
Off balance. For Wilamette valley, this was an incredible disappointment. Leave it on the shelf.
It was very smooth but I felt it was a little dull.

This wine’s dark cherry aromas are supported by a pronounced oak frame, as dark as bitter chocolate. It’s intense and brooding, with oak playing more of a supporting role in the texture and flavor. Cellar and let the wood settle for a year.
Vivid ruby. Black raspberry, musky flowers and anise on the nose. Juicy and light on its feet, offering slightly jammy dark berry and cherry flavors and a touch of spiciness. Closes with good breadth, a touch of warmth and gentle sweetness. This fruit-centric pinot would be good with a light chill.
This is a fine introduction to an outstanding Oregon Pinot Noir vintage. Forward and instantly accessible, it plays off pretty cherry fruit flavors and aromatics. Tannins are fully ripe and the acidity has kept pace.
Fresh and vibrant, with lively melon and pear flavors, finishing on a citrusy note. Drink now.
Relatively lush for the coolness of the vintage, this velvety red leads with dark cherry scents gathered by a tarry earthiness. Its flavors stay dark and savory, the gripping tannins a touch furry, suggesting that it’s packed with potential energy. A year in the cellar will give it further definition.
Light on its feet and intense in flavor, offering tea leaf-accented cherry and pomegranate flavors, with nicely buffed tannins. Finishes with richness and deftness. Drink now through 2018.
Oak-driven with a chocolate cherry scent, this wine mellows and integrates with air, revealing a spicy black cherry core that feels warm, supple and giving. The tannins are round, the finish fresh and lively. For roast salmon.
