Elk Cove Pinot Gris 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

91 pts - Wine EnthusiastThis is a fruit powered wine, leaded with fresh pear, melon, and tropical flavors. It shows no sign of having suffered from the wet, cool weather that hit Oregon during the 2007 harvest. It seems riper than the ’06 bottling, with lower acids, and a streak of vanilla and coconut wrapping up the finish.Wall Street Journal Pick

Elk Cove Vineyards is one of Oregon's oldest and most respected wine producers. Founded in 1974, by Pat and Joe Campbell, our focus has always been to produce hand crafted, Estate grown wines that can rival the best in the world. Estate Vineyards Estate vineyards now cover over 180 acres on four separate sites in the Northern Willamette Valley. Steep south facing slopes, of Willakenzie and Laurelwood soil types with excellent drainage, provide the perfect environment to grow the world class wine grapes that are the basis for creating Elk Cove wines. Proper site selection and meticulous vine management along with harvesting at very low yields creates the concentration and depth of flavor that are hallmarks of Elk Cove wines. Family Owned and Operated Elk Cove Vineyards proudly remains a family owned and operated winery. Winemaker Adam Godlee Campbell joined forces with his parents in 1995 to produce outstanding Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Growing up among the vines on the Elk Cove Estate has instilled a tremendous respect for the soil in which the grapes were grown, therefore his role as winemaker is one of stewardship over intervention. In the winery Adam employs gravity flow and gentle handling to protect the inherent qualities of the Estate grown fruit. We at Elk Cove hope you enjoy these wines as much as we all enjoyed the creative process in making them. Read less

This has improved since last time I tried it. It is now quite fragrant with dusty notes and soft spice tones adding some complexity to the slightly baked apple fruit. Smells a bit quartzy/steely with a touch of spearmint and an insinuation of cheese rind. Nice round entry with a wave of sweet pear and light pineapple fruit supported by bright acids and tinted with just a hint of dried tropical fruits. The nice clean finish has a touch of minerality and lingering ripe fruit tones that show a hint more citrus character. A very flavorful and balanced example of Pinot Gris that seems as ideally suited for casually summer sipping as it does for enjoying at the table. I would like to serve this with a nice spinach salad with toasted nuts, Brie and cranberries or perhaps with some Halibut sautéed with capers and green olives or grilled shrimp wrapped in prosciutto! 90pts

This is a rich Pinot Gris with tones of tropical fruit character. The nose offers up deep, sweet almost honied fruit tones and the palate is soft and rich with a hint of dried mango and papaya before turning more citrusy and bright on the long finish. Pretty big scaled but with wonderful balance. 88pts

This is full or pressed flower notes, apple seeds, and pollen on the nose helping to frame the very crisp white fruit notes with a fine verdant freshness. On entry this is rich and round with pronounced acidity popping on the mid-palate. The flavors are somewhat low intensity with more of the apple seed and pollen tones found on the nose, and notes of dried fruit. The scale of this wine is modest, what is here is very nice but a little more flesh might not be a bad thing. A touch underwhelming today. 87pts

I had this wine last summer and loved it.. and that's coming from a guy that usually drinks red. Very tasty!

I loved this wine from the get go. It's vibrant flavor was immediately apparent, and the finish was smooth and simple. Light fruity flavors without the sweet so none of the flavors were drowned out. This is now a permanent favorite.

Bananas and tropical fruit are strong in the aroma, with fried plantains and plums. The mouth is very bright and fruity.

Very crisp wine with flavors of lemons, peach, mango and pineapple. Very crisp and clean, with a mineral streak. Nice

Still drinking well. It has developed a bit more color and body as well as some complexity. Compared with a Del Rio '07 this was much more interesting.

We really like this wine. It's deep enough to satisfy those who want more than the usually light pinot grigio wines. It offers a very soft hint of spice and fruity that is more robust than most. Great with chicken based salads.
