Elio Grasso Nebbiolo Langhe DOC Gavarini 2001

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very tight on the nose with slow to emerge fresh vegetal tones, a bit stemmy, gaining minty and medicinal tones in the glass with a touch of prune on the nose, really seems to show warm vintage character 2+ Surprisingly cool and layered in the mouth with very fine, rounded tannin 3 Lovely complexity developing in the mouth with solid sottobosco, slightly autumnal, slightly tobacco edges to the earthy, roasted cherry fruit 3 A bit beet rooty on the finish though with sweet cherry fruit peaking out on the long finish and some coriander nuances 2+

The 2000 Gavarini Vigna Chinera, from a vineyard with somewhat sandy soil, is elegant and fragrant with notes of roses, licorice and spice. Medium-bodied and soft, but with a firm tannic underpinning, it should last until 2015.

Bright, deep red. Pungent red berries and minerals on the vibrant nose. Dense, thick and sweet, but with brisk acids giving lift to the red berry and mineral flavors. A vibrant 2000 Barolo, if not quite as floral or complex as the Casa Maté.

The 2001 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera presents a nose of flowers, spices, minerals and toasted oak. It is a beautiful, medium-bodied Barolo that offers plenty of sweet red fruit with excellent length and terrific overall harmony. It is all class and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2008ndash;2018.

A lovely mixture of strawberries and cherries with hints of raspberries. Almost tropical. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a gorgeous ripe fruit finish. Very velvety. Goes on and on. Best after 2008.

Good medium red. Pure, highly aromatic nose combines strawberry, dried flowers, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, broad and rich, with good density of texture leavened by harmonious acidity. Serious, floral, minerally Barolo thatrsquo;s still youthfully tight. Finishes quite long, with substantial but sweet tannins.
