Buttery at first then a little herbal on the nose with a touch of oak under bright herb and licorice inflected wild berry fruit. Focused if a bit small in the mouth, this is on the tighter side for the vintage with burnished cherry and wild strawberry fruit that’s a bit chewy and a bit on the spicy side. There's nice transparency here with soil tones and sweet wood on the backend, though the finish is tight and short showing hints of carob and nutella on the finale. This needs time. 90pts

Old watermelon, heavy fruit, a bit fudgy, extract, Bovril, meat extract, candied melon peel, loose entry, lacks focus and cut, good soft tannins but no center. Nice soft, slightly medicinal fruit, simple, some nice layered fruit on the backend, shows a bit of elegance, a bit tough on the finish, long but simple. Should improve.

Slight musk note to the very perfumed nose with a strong floral top note, a touch spicy and minerally with a note of old wood/salame 3+ Big but suave in the mouth with tons of ripe tannins and juicy acidity 3 Dark and chewy fruit leaning towards black raspberry/dark cherry with a slightly bittersweet cocoa edge 2+ Fresh cherry fruit on the finish which is a touch short with more of that cocoa edge 2

Very matte on the nose with strong rose and tar notes over slightly pruny fruit that has a torrefied/roast coffee/cocoa edge 2 A bit ponderous with a dull attack though nice quality to the tannins and acids if a bit heavy 2 The palate is powerful with roasted herb, menthol and fudgy tones to the dark pruny fruit 2 Finishes with admirable length that balances clean red fruits and nice chinato herbs 3

The light nose has a wispy elegance to the smoky asphalt and anise tinged nose that features classic cherries in alcohol layered with subtle leafy herbs 3 Soft and gentle in the mouth with good acidity and ripe tannins if a touch relaxed 2+ Ever so slightly jammy in the mouth but with excellent purity of slightly candied strawberry/red cherry fruit that reveals just a touch of limestony minerality 3 Finishes with solid length to the red fruits that offer up nuanced notes of light mineral tones and lovely middle-eastern spice and tea notes 3

Smoky on the nose with dark, oily herb notes a touch of shoe polish, seaweed, and dried cow patty, seems almost a touch bretty 2+ Cool in the mouth with big tannins and a youthful feel 2 Full of dark berry fruit but a bit blocky and monolithic with a dried fruit tone emerging 2 Dark, fudgy and a bit short 2

Jammy fruit tones on the nose are freshened by slightly herbal floral notes and some embedded mineral nuances 2+ With good acidity yet drying tannins this comes off as a bit clumsy 2 Quite tannic at this point, closed but the subtle dried strawberry fruit may not have the power to deal with these tannins 2 Finish is short and consistent with the midpalate 2

This bottle was drop dead gorgeous with its first glass (9 am). It was very feminine and pretty with fresh strawberry, sour cherry, roses, cedar and cinnamon stick and little of its structure poking through. The palate was nearly weightless. Then it shut down through the next six hours, where each taste showed a painfully young, structured Nebbiolo. However, at 4 PM, it reemerged as a beautiful bruiser with a ripe dark fruit and spice profile. The nose was marred slightly by the noticeable presence of heat but it was still lovely, and on the palate, it was firing on all cylinders with wonderful focus of red fruit. At every taste, the finish was amazingly long with staying red fruits that seemed to penetrate and saturate the taste buds. However, around 6pm, this bottle started to show a lot of its alcohol on both the nose and palate and I started to pick up on a lot of the Port-like notes that I've read about in other's tasting notes. The fruit turned candied and the mouthfeel showed like a weighty-velvet with glycerol notes. From this performance, it's hard to see where this bottle is going. I've heard good and bad about 2007, and i can image from today's performance, that if this was popped and poured, then my impression would be good and in the 95 point range. However, if given the time to really air out, I would rate it around 88 points. That's a pretty big swing, and so for now, I reserve judgement. Call it a 88 - 95 point wine, or just call me "Neutral".

Classic nose with cherries in alcohol topped by floral, spice and mineral tones with a suggestion of a Tootsie Roll. Silky on entry with pure, bright red fruits and wonderful balance. Exhibits elegance and finesse on the mid-palate with sweet fruit, but no fat, allowing the wine to express with great clarity. Lovely ripe tannins here that lead to an extended finish, which is full of expressive fruit-driven aromatics. 94pts

A deeper, fruity red with great balance.

Delicate aromas, with dark fruits, tobacco and minerals prevalent. A hint of rose petals. Red burgundy-like light, tannic (still), and very long. A dry, fresh, and elegant wine, representing good value for the money. Hard to find sub-par wines at the Grasso family’s estate! http://bit.ly/rLqbAH

The nose showed savory dark cherry reduction sauce, plum, tobacco, spice, undergrowth, mountain herbs, soil and mineral tones. On the palate it was rich and deep with silky textures and a hint of tannin still remaining. Flavors of black cherry and cinnamon spice permeated the palate though the finish, which lasted for half a minute.

The nose showed ripe cherry up front, which turned more to plum, rose and potpourri, a hint of mushroom and wet fall leaves. On the palate it was soft like silk, feeling weighty yet somehow light on it's feet. Dark red fruit, menthol and a core of minerals saturated the palate and stayed through the long finish. A balanced dose of fine grained tannin remained, which promised years of development yet still allowed this early glimpse to be incredibly enjoyable.

Meaty, spicy fruit nose. Good fresh acidity, bright ripe cherry and a bit of medicine.

Licorice, tar, menthol, spices and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that flow from the 2008 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate. This dramatic, large-scaled Barolo impresses for its towering depth, complexity and sheer pedigree. Tar, menthol, licorice and spices wrap around the fleshy, deep finish. The Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate is considerably more powerful than the silkier Gavarini, but both wines represent the height of finesse in Nebbiolo. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2038.

So graceful and harmonious, yet well-structured, with a lush texture covering the acidity and tannins. That provides the ideal foil for this red’s flavors of cherry, plum, spice and tobacco. Finishes long, with freshness and an accent of mineral. Best from 2014 through 2027.

The 2006 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate is simply marvelous. Sweet, balsamic and layered, this powerful Barolo covers the palate with endless dimensions to its fruit, showing exceptional richness and density. The wine continues to blossom beautifully in the glass with myriad expressions of dark, perfumed fruit that are hard to fully capture with words. This is class personified, but the tannins will require a measure of patience. Still, it is impossible to miss the wine's pedigree and significant potential. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. I was deeply impressed with the Barolos I tasted this year from Elio and Gianluca Grasso. This is an important vintage for the Grasso family, and readers will want to get their hands on these exceptionally pure, beautiful wines before they disappear.

Good full red. Reticent nose offers strawberry, nuts, mocha and brown spices ("more typical Barolo," notes Grasso and less red-fruity at this stage). Fat, sweet and deep; showing more texture than the Gavarini but less open to inspection today. This really explodes on the back half, finishing with superb breadth and length and a perfume of dried flowers. Big, dense tannins and a firm acid spine give this a serious structure.

Full of sweet, ripe plum, cherry, licorice and eucalyptus notes, this is a powerful red. Its tannins are just as gripping, keeping everything in check and ensuring a long life. Fresh, mineral finish. Best from 2014 through 2035.
