Currently, the Elio Grasso estate has a productive vineyard holding of 14 hectares. The cellar uses only estate-grown grapes from varieties traditionally grown, with excellent results, in the Langhe hill country near Alba. Reflecting the imprint of the vineyard where the fruit was grown in order to give our wines their unique personality is the goal that we - myself, my wife Marina and our son, Gianluca - strive to achieve, with the invaluable assistance of our consultant wine technician, Piero Ballario. We believe that to be acknowledged first as grape farmers, and then as wine producers, is the best way to honour, and continue the labours of, those who have faced before us the challenges that working with nature and her products, like wine, entails. This, and a desire to be true to ourselves, prompts us propose, without presumption, the convictions and conduct shared by all Langhe farming families, characteristics worth preserving and which we believe make the difference. A bit of wood on the nose followed by aromas of clay, silica, spice, lingonberry, and deep camphor and dried herbal note emerge from the glass. Powerful with dark, rich fruit on entry, this has rather soft tannins and bright acids supporting plummy, heavy, earthy flavors that are a bit chunky in the mouth. Dense with tannins, this is quite powerful but also shows a bit front loaded with lingonberry fruit in alcohol on the palate, finishing a little short with some obvious alcohol poking out. 91pts

Spicy nose with deep earth, leather, tar and cherries in alcohol aromas. This is rather more classic than the Chiniera with incipient fungi and first floor aromas. Rich and round with riper tannins than the Chiniera, this has a lovely core of fruit, lightly spicy yet very aromatic in the mouth with tar, soil, and herb nuances framing the bitter cherry fruits. Really finely structured and balanced with excellent length, This has some palate staining depth of flavor and while it is a touch on the rich, soft side reflecting the vintage it is really finely crafted. 93pts

Buttery at first then a little herbal on the nose with a touch of oak under bright herb and licorice inflected wild berry fruit. Focused if a bit small in the mouth, this is on the tighter side for the vintage with burnished cherry and wild strawberry fruit that’s a bit chewy and a bit on the spicy side. There's nice transparency here with soil tones and sweet wood on the backend, though the finish is tight and short showing hints of carob and nutella on the finale. This needs time. 90pts

Lots of fine wild raspberry and strawberry aromas framed with some sweet vanilla and smoky cedary notes and a touch of fennel and rosehips greet the nose. Opulent and lush on the palate, this is packed with rich red fruits framed with a hint of coffee bean and some gentle herbal nuances. The oak is remarkably well integrated on the palate but does become more obvious on the finish with a drying center back of tongue quality to the tannins. Slightly chewy red cherry fruits on the palate, with some light mint and spice notes on the backend that drive the moderately long licorice laced finish that is cut short by the wood tannins, this is awfully good but the load of wood tannins is slightly troubling. 92pts

Old watermelon, heavy fruit, a bit fudgy, extract, Bovril, meat extract, candied melon peel, loose entry, lacks focus and cut, good soft tannins but no center. Nice soft, slightly medicinal fruit, simple, some nice layered fruit on the backend, shows a bit of elegance, a bit tough on the finish, long but simple. Should improve.

Slight musk note to the very perfumed nose with a strong floral top note, a touch spicy and minerally with a note of old wood/salame 3+ Big but suave in the mouth with tons of ripe tannins and juicy acidity 3 Dark and chewy fruit leaning towards black raspberry/dark cherry with a slightly bittersweet cocoa edge 2+ Fresh cherry fruit on the finish which is a touch short with more of that cocoa edge 2

A bit oxidized and very high toned on the nose with a little coffee and leather nuance. Soft and a bit oxidized and sweet in the mouth. This is unfortunately dried out with some subtle red fruit and herbal spice flavors but the tannins that are tough and chewy and will probably not outlast the fruit. Short finish. 82pts

This bottle was drop dead gorgeous with its first glass (9 am). It was very feminine and pretty with fresh strawberry, sour cherry, roses, cedar and cinnamon stick and little of its structure poking through. The palate was nearly weightless. Then it shut down through the next six hours, where each taste showed a painfully young, structured Nebbiolo. However, at 4 PM, it reemerged as a beautiful bruiser with a ripe dark fruit and spice profile. The nose was marred slightly by the noticeable presence of heat but it was still lovely, and on the palate, it was firing on all cylinders with wonderful focus of red fruit. At every taste, the finish was amazingly long with staying red fruits that seemed to penetrate and saturate the taste buds. However, around 6pm, this bottle started to show a lot of its alcohol on both the nose and palate and I started to pick up on a lot of the Port-like notes that I've read about in other's tasting notes. The fruit turned candied and the mouthfeel showed like a weighty-velvet with glycerol notes. From this performance, it's hard to see where this bottle is going. I've heard good and bad about 2007, and i can image from today's performance, that if this was popped and poured, then my impression would be good and in the 95 point range. However, if given the time to really air out, I would rate it around 88 points. That's a pretty big swing, and so for now, I reserve judgement. Call it a 88 - 95 point wine, or just call me "Neutral".

Classic nose with cherries in alcohol topped by floral, spice and mineral tones with a suggestion of a Tootsie Roll. Silky on entry with pure, bright red fruits and wonderful balance. Exhibits elegance and finesse on the mid-palate with sweet fruit, but no fat, allowing the wine to express with great clarity. Lovely ripe tannins here that lead to an extended finish, which is full of expressive fruit-driven aromatics. 94pts

Delicate aromas, with dark fruits, tobacco and minerals prevalent. A hint of rose petals. Red burgundy-like light, tannic (still), and very long. A dry, fresh, and elegant wine, representing good value for the money. Hard to find sub-par wines at the Grasso family’s estate! http://bit.ly/rLqbAH

Good medium red. Deep brooding nose offers currant cherry and spices. Plush broad and sweet on the palate but less open to inspection today than the Gavarini. With aeration flavors of redcurrant tobacco and mocha emerged. Big but nicely distributed tannins arrive late giving the finish excellent length. The Grassos do about 25 days of total maceration including two weeks with a submerged cap but keep the fermentation temperature below 28 degrees C (and usually no higher than 26) in

This shows a beautiful depth of fruit with fine tannins. There are hints of hazelnut character as well. Full and delicious with a long long finish. The clay soil gives more structure and richness to this wine than Gavarini Vigna Chiniera. Better in 2015. James Suckling.

Grassos 2009 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Math is a bit richer deeper and darker than the Gavarini but the differences between the wines arent as marked as they usually are. That is the essence 2009. Dark cherries plums menthol and spices flesh out on the broad richly textured finish. As good as this is and the Ginestra is quite good in 2009 the expression of site is more muted than is typically the case. Antonio Galloni.

Hints of coffee and sandalwood mark this rich yet racy red, whose core flavors are cherry, strawberry and underbrush. There’s some muscle and density, firming up on the finish, with adequate sweet fruit for balance. Best from 2015 through 2030.

Licorice, tar, menthol, spices and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that flow from the 2008 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate. This dramatic, large-scaled Barolo impresses for its towering depth, complexity and sheer pedigree. Tar, menthol, licorice and spices wrap around the fleshy, deep finish. The Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate is considerably more powerful than the silkier Gavarini, but both wines represent the height of finesse in Nebbiolo. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2038.
