While opening slowly this is obviously woody but with nice floral tones. There is bittersweet chocolate here over dark fruit with touches of waxiness and earth. The perfumes tend to drift away as notes of lilac and earth are replaced with oaky coffee tones but the deep florality struggles mightily to reassert itself. Sweetly fruited in the mouth with fine balance and good focus this none-the-less has a touch too much oak. The plush texture is pleasant and the fine tannins polished but the overall feel of the wine is a bit too matte and lacks a bit of juicy liveliness. Solid but a bit muddled. 2008-2018 86pts

This was cedary with some raw wood tones still in evidence but there reamains an underlayment of typical nettle and fruit tones. In truth i did not take notes for this wine but recall that there seemed to be some Barolo lost in there somewhere. A hesitant and imprecise assesment.

Tight on the nose but with an emerging core of sweet candied angelica root and menthol. This seems so hard but slowly reveals a clean and fresh set of classic aromatics that show a touch of vanilla but are dominated by rose petals, a bit of roasty meatiness and herbs, and glassy sour cherry fruit. On entry this exhibits a sweet/sour contrast that is very refreshing with high-toned raspberry fruit that floats over extremely finely grained tannins. This is simple but super fresh. It’s light bodied and speaks more of Nebbiolo than Barolo but is delicious. 88pts

Around 5 pm we found that some of the bottles were subpar so we began to replace them. I opened the normale 82 from Altare as well which showed a beuatifil menthol nose but was tight on the palate even though one could sense great balance in a more delicate model. Alas when we finally got to it aroun 10 pm it was corked. This on the other hand was not. This $3 wine, that is what i paid for it 20 years ago, long story, had a lovely perfumey nose with some notes of bouillion and bones but more derict jammy fruit with a rich poppy seed element. Rich and chewy in the mouth this was still very youthful, great strucutre, a tenderness to the tannins, with the chees course this turned downright decadent with it's plush mouthfeel.

The Altare Arborina showed a classic Barolo nose of red fruits, plum skins, roses, tar, a hint of animal musk and undergrowth. The nose pulled me in and reminded me somehow of a childhood Autumn days with dried leaves and pine nestles. On the palate, it showed an elegant, full body, backed by a balance of tannin and acid. The fruit was rich but not over-ripe with sweet spice and an airy, refreshing note of menthol. The finish was long with red fruits, tobacco and a hint of brown sugar. This wines need more time and is truly stunning. It reminded me very much of some of the best '96s I've tasted.

The nose came off as restrained to me as if I was smelling Barolo through a veil with light notes of red fruit and roses. On the palate, I found cherry with old cedar, which lead to a soft tannic pull on the finish. This bottle did not receive the same decanting and the others in the flight and may have really come around with more time.

decanted for sediment- color is still dark ruby with little/no bricking. nose was intense cherry with tar and violets. palate is very primary, super dark black cherry fruit. a little thicker than I might prefer, but very good. on the young side to be sure.

The 2009 Langhe Arborina (Nebbiolo) jumps from the glass with freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint. This energetic, impeccable wine boasts incredible class and sheer elegance. Bright, dark red. Black cherry, menthol and minerals on the nose. Ripe, suave and sweet in the mouth; less fleshy but more minerally than the 2007. Best today on the dry, slowly mounting, rather powerful finish, which features very fresh fruits an... Stephen Tanzers IWC. The 2008 Langhe Arborina (Nebbiolo) is quite beautiful. It doesn't have the vibrancy or power of the 2009, yet the pedigree of this hillside site comes through in spades just the same. Floral notes wrap around the delicate, perfumed finish. There is ... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2008 Altare, Elio Vigna Arborina 750ml

The 2008 Barolo Arborina is gorgeous for the way it combines layers of fleshy dark fruit in the medium-bodied style of the year. Fresh and aromatic, this red is packed with sweet cherry, leather, clove and iron flavors. Fused to a bed of stiff, mouthcoating tannins, with a long aftertaste of sweet spice and mineral.
