Offering up lovely notes of spiced black cherries, with hints of integrated wood, tar, licorice and antiseptic. This is perfumed and rather focused on the nose, gaining notes of mint, flowers and a touch of clove studded orange peel with time in the glass. Silky and bright in the mouth, with lovely depth and lots of polished fine-grained tannins, this is easy to drink with good length and richness, though it is a bit on the simple side. Air brings out the chocolate oak influence and dusty tannins on the finish that seem a little clumsy after the silkiness of the palate. 88 points

The 2000 Barolo Arborina, expansive and ripe in aroma with much red fruit and licorice, is fleshy, velvety, and full, continuous in its flow and shapely and solid on the close. Drink: 2005-2018. This is very pretty, with blackberry, mineral and cherry character. Full-bodied, with a lovely core of silky tannins and a long finish. Slightly reserved, but will turn out wonderfully. Best after 2007.

96 points Wine Spectator: This smells like a fruit bowl. Is it Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir from Côte de Nuits? Fabulous. Full-bodied, with soft, refined tannins and a generous palate of ultrarich yet refined fruit. You could drink it now but it will reward those who are patient. From the 25-acre Arborina vineyard in Annunziata. Best after 2009. 550 cases made. (7/31/04)
