Elicius Umbria Rosso IGT 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Only the best grapes contribute to the creation of this wine whose name evokes the grandeur of the almighty Jupiter Elicius, an epithet that means God of lighting. Obtained from a blend of Montepulciano and Sagrantino grape varieties, this smooth, elegant and mellow wine, ages for 18 months in medium toasted French barrels and slavonian oak casks and refines in bottles for 12 months. Elicius is Mis en Bouteille au Château. The resulting intense dark garnet red wine, suggests enjoyable toasted aromas and intense fruited plum and cherry flavours. Elicius is suited for ageing and is ideal paired with venison, roasted and braised meat.

The estate of Montegiove has a centennial tradition of passionate wine making and olive growing, giving birth to products of outstanding and absolute virtue. Guided by a philosophy based upon the belief that the production must be the most faithful expression of the unique and precious terroir that produces it, our choices are grounded on a twofold objective: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality and attention to every detail. In 1968 the Marquis Paolo Misciattelli Mocenigo Soranzo writes: “The cellars of the Castle of Montegiove are not a large scale industrial plant, but those of a large farm where the owners for generations have adopted progressive farming practices and perfected their wines and vineyards.” The estate comprises a multitude of different soil types, and thus allows the different grape varieties to be planted only at the most suitable sites with respect to soil type, microclimate and sun exposure. The red wine is generated uniquely by grapes produced on the estate of Montegiove, exclusively from selected grape clusters, handpicked at perfect ripeness and meticulously vinified in the castle cellars that date back to the XVI century and have been recently renovated. Large parts of the vineyards of the estate have been replanted. The number of fields allocated to viticulture has been reduced in comparison to the seventies, to allow the estate to concentrate on the production of red grapes of high quality. The vineyards include typical Umbrian and Tuscan varieties: Sangiovese using the classic clones of Brunello and Prugnolo gentile known from the famous wine districts of Montalcino and Montepulciano. The other varieties are: Sagrantino (indigenous Umbrian variety), selection of high quality producing French clones of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate still has vineyards from the seventies which include: Montepulciano, Barbera and Sangiovese. Read less
