Elegia Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 2011

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.cellartrade.co.uk for £13. Prtimitivo di Manduria is a DOC created in 1974 for dry red wines from an area around the town of Manduria in the heel of Italy. The primitivo grape is dark skinned and early ripening and is thought by some to have originated in ancient Greece and by others in Croatia. It is also grown in California where it is known as zinfadel. The word 'riserva' indicates that the wine has spent time in oak barrels. My bottle is 100% primitivo and comes from a large co-operative group. I started the bottle last night with my supper of baked turkey breast..It is a thick and heavy bottle. The wine is dark coloured and has lots of intense blackberry and cherry style fruit with more than a hint of pepper, particularly on the finish. The tannins were unobtrusive. In short, this is a beautiful wine that would match many foods
