What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

The fruit for Elderton Shiraz is grown exclusively on the lderton Vineyard situated on the banks of the North Para River, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley, South Australia. Elderton was transformed from a vineyard supplying quality fruit to other wineries to a winery in its own right in 1982, and have since won much recognition for all of the wines, especially the Shiraz. Barossa Shiraz is now highly collectable worldwide, and the Elderton is always a benchmark for the region.

There are 12 blocks of shiraz on the Elderton Estate, some as old as 100 years, which grow in deep alluvial soils read more...over limestone. Combined with a Mediterranean climate and minimal supplemented irrigation, this creates what one can only describe as 'the perfect Shiraz vineyard'. Mainly the grapes are machine harvested in the cool of the night, at an optimum maturity of about 14-14.5°Baume. This allows a quick delivery to winery for crushing, before any spoilage can occur. Fantastic winter rains in 2000 combined with a hot and dry summer produced reds in the Barossa of outstanding character.

Destemming and inoculation with a selected yeast strain and fermentation in stainless steel potter fermenters at 30°C for approximately seven days before maturation in French and American oak puncheons for 16 months.

100% Barossa Valley Shiraz
Colour: Amazingly intense dark magenta.
Nose: A lifted bouquet of violets, vanilla and white pepper, with spicy overtones.
Palate: A complex, classic, concentrated Shiraz. Intense with rich sweet fruit, yet still very soft. Plum, chocolate and spice integrate well on the palate with a soft vanilla finish. Nice oak showing in this well balanced wine.
