Sweet red berry and gym socks on the nose. Loads of funk. Dried mulberry with spice box, eucalyptus and anise. Generous fruit on the palate with low, soft tannin. Crisp acid. Dry finish. Ends on a red berry note. 86 pts. 12/15/12

Powerful, complex aromas leap from glass on opening, including plum, vanilla and chocolate, with notes of pepper and blueberry adding to the luscious medley. A sumptuous plush, buttery mouthfeel spreads throughout the palate with plum and chocolate following, punctuated by a zingy, peppery finish. A rich, silky texture covers the tongue, and smooth tannins keep a symphony of tastes emerging. Deeper tastes of dark fruit develop with decanting over three hours. Wine becomes more complex, velvety and layered with time in the air. Needs three hours to reach peak. Absolutely wonderful at 4 hours.

Powerful aromas leap from the glass on opening, including plum, vanilla and chocolate, with notes of pepper and blueberry adding to the luscious medley. A wonderful, plush, buttery mouthfeel spreads throughout the palate with blackberry, plum and chocolate following, punctuated by a zingy, peppery display of syncopated, upbeat acidity. A touch of sweet pipe tobacco decorates the center. Rich, smooth tannins maintain a complex structure through a long, luxurious finish in which the symphony of tastes continues to emerge. Deeper, more varied tastes of dark fruit evolve with time. This wine becomes increasingly complex, developing velvety layers and rich combinations with time in the air. Absolutely wonderful at 3 hours. A nice surprise at four hours is a fresh whiff of peppermint on the nose and new earthy flavors on the palate, rendering this wine a mercurial delight for an entire evening.

This was a great blend. I believe it was about 70% Shiraz 30 % Cab. It seemed to be dark and deep when looking at it, but had a nice medium body to it. As it was in the mouth and the taste, it was low on tannins but with a bit more noticeable acidity. Cherry really stuck out here. It sat on the tongue for awhile afterward making for a great finish.

Inky purple. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of blackberry, cola and licorice, with a suave floral note in the background. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, offering gently sweet dark fruit flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. Dusty tannins come on late and give shape to the long, focused finish. This shiraz is balanced to age.

Deep garnet-purple color the 2010 Estate Shiraz has a classic nose of warm blackberries and blueberry compote with hints of licorice toast yeast extract and a whiff of bacon. Big full-bodied and bold it has a medium-firm level of velvety tannins lively acid and a good long finish. Delicious now it should keep to 2020+. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Elderton was transformed from a vineyard supplying quality fruit to other wineries to a winery in its own right in 1982 by Lorraine and Neil Ashmead. Elderton Wines is now run by the second generation - Cameron and Allister Ashmead. Elderton has been listed multiple times among Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines and received numerous other prestigious accolades. The fruit for this Elderton Shiraz is sourced mainly from the Elderton Vineyard situated on the banks of the North Para River, Barossa Valley. There are 12 blocks of Shiraz on the Elderton Estate, some as old as 100 years, which grow in deep alluvial soils over limestone. Combined with a Mediterranean climate and minimal supplemented irrigation, this creates what one can only describe as ‘the perfect Shiraz vineyard’. The 2010 vintage is an absolute classic in South Australia. This Shiraz was fermented in concrete open top fermenters for approximately 5 - 7 days. The wine was aged American oak puncheons for 14 months. James Halliday scored it 94 points saying “Deep crimson, purple hue; a bright and fragrant wine, showing blackberry, licorice, toasty oak and violets on the bouquet; the medium-bodied palate is lively and super fresh, accessible and thoroughly engaging, offering very good value in every respect."
