Elderton Shiraz 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2004 Shiraz Command comes from a single block of 104-year-old vines. It was aged in 100% new oak. Opaque purple-colored, this Shiraz has fabulous aromatics of smoke, melted tar, licorice, espresso, game, and blueberry compote. Layered but tight, this full-bodied wine is thick, rich, and totally hedonistic. The finish lasts for 60 seconds. 98 points INSIDER SCOOP: Never before have we have we been able to offer you so many points for so few bucks. Elderton Command Shiraz, 2004 is a must have because: HALF PRICE: At $98/bottle this wine costs less than 1/2 the normal entry fee for a 98 point wine: $192/bottle (R. Parker) and $214/bottle (Wine Spectator). AGE WORTHY: Elderton recognized by both the Wine Spectator and Robert Parker as Australias most age-worthy Shiraz, ahead of Penfolds' Grange. See Wine Spectator 10/15/08 article below. TASTY: After sampling last week, we can testify that its insanely tasty, reminding us of the best of Mollydooker + Torbreck! This offer is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.

This stunning wine is very close to perfection. At uncorking, the nose opens to a gorgeous aromatic medley of wild game, coffee, tar, and floral wafts around the edges. The palate is a lush, densely layered symphony of cherry, with undertones of cobbler and jam, surrounded by gentle spices, along with licorice and vanilla. An opulent finish lingers, front to back, as bursts of concentrated flavors intermingle and dance. At one hour, a new zing appears at the back, adding a fresh dimension to the finish. From salivation around the middle of the tongue to a structured dryness that penetrates the mouth walls, the wine becomes a concert hall instead of a recording studio. At four hours, a whole new symphony of fruit and spice explodes. Amazing.

The 2004 Shiraz "Command" comes from a single block of 104-year-old vines. It was aged in 100% new oak puncheons (400 liter barrels). Opaque purple-colored, this Shiraz has fabulous aromatics of smoke, melted tar, licorice, espresso, game, and blueberry compote. Layered but tight, this full-bodied wine is thick, rich, and totally hedonistic. The finish lasts for 60 seconds. However, be warned. This monumental Shiraz needs 10-15 years to fully unfold. It will provide pleasure through 2035.

Silky tannins and rich flavors add up to an arresting wine, a seductive Shiraz that oozes with rich cherry, plum, exotic spice and meat flavors that linger against grace notes of chocolate and espresso. Delicious stuff, and it's built to last. Drink now through 2020.

Dark purple. Bright red and dark berry scents display impressive focus and clarity, with subtle baking spice and vanilla notes adding complexity. Very fresh - in fact almost painfully young - with nervy raspberry and cherry flavors supported by silky tannins and a jolt of acidity on the back. This opened up a bit with air, but really should be cellared for at least another five years.

The 2001 Shiraz Command exhibits a slightly more roasted character than the 2002 as well as a hint of espresso in the nose, a touch more alcohol, and more elevated tannin. It also possesses tremendous concentration, intensity, and power, yet remains remarkably well-balanced and pure. This 3,000-case cuvee is one of South Australia's great classics. It should drink well for 15 years.
