Bright ruby. Sexy oak spices and blackberry on the nose, with a deeper boysenberry quality developing with air. Sappy and velvety in texture, with penetrating dark berry, bitter cherry skin and baking spice flavors. Finishes broad, sweet and long, repeating the dark fruit notes and leaving an alluring violet pastille note behind. Retains bright hue; has good structure and length to its black fruits which are framed by gentle vanillin oak. Screwcap.
Vivid ruby. Fragrant aromas of black raspberry, vanilla and violet, with notes of black tea and licorice adding depth. Sweet and expansive but focused, with energetic dark fruit flavors giving way to smoky minerals on the back end. Gentle tannins lend shape to the long, juicy finish. The estate wines begin with the dark crimson-colored 2007 Shiraz Elderton Estate. Aromas of Asian spices, smoked meat, lavender, and blueberry lead to a spicy, ripe, flavorful Shiraz with a bit less depth and a bit more structure than normal, likely due to the challenging vintage. Nevertheless, it is a strong effort that will flesh out over the next 2-3 years and drink well through 2019. ** SOLD OUT **
Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The Elderton vineyard which was planted in 1904 by Samuel Elderton Tolley, was purchased by the Ashmead family in the late 1970's and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest. It was well after a decade of hard work and toil that the winery shot to prominence in the early 1990's, after winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1993 Melbourne Wine Show. There has been an amazing amount of further wine show success including the World’s Best Shiraz Trophy at the 2000 London International Wine & Spirits Competition. Elderton has also enjoyed being the darling of the worlds wine press, with great endorsements given by James Halliday, Robert Parker, The Wine Spectator Magazine as well as countless others. Furthermore, in 2005, Elderton was named in the Top 100 Wineries in the World by Wine & Spirit Magazine. There are 12 blocks of Shiraz on the Elderton Estate, some as old as 100 years, which grow in deep alluvial soils over limestone. Combined with a Mediterranean climate and minimal supplemented irrigation, this creates what one can only describe as ‘the perfect Shiraz vineyard’. Mainly the grapes are machine harvested in the cool of the night, at an optimum maturity of about 14 - 15 Baume. This allows a quick delivery to the winery for crushing, before any spoilage can occur. This wine has excellent quality fruit with higher Baume, good natural acid and superb flavour. It shows great balance and potential for longevity.
