I hardly know were to start with this week's Vino selection.  I have been on a search for new wine styles to try and in particular something new to drink on casual occasions.  I think I may have found this with El Coto's Rosado. As girly as drinking a pink wine can seem, don't let the stigmas of Berringer's White Zinfandel turn you off from this wine.  This blend of Grenache and Temperanillo from the Rioja region of spain had a great nose with gamy hints of jerky and the floral musk you might get in your grandmother's perfume.  The first sip was full of watermelon that has been lightly salted, something my grandfather used to do to bring out the sweetness of the watermelon. This wine would be perfect at a late evening barbecue in the middle of summer pairing well with corn on the cob, fruit salad and a fat pork chop.  Please do yourself a favor and give the pink stuff a try (not Pepto) and don't forget to introduce it to your friends!

El Coto de Rioja, located in Oyón, was founded in 1970 by a group of winemakers committed to creating a new type of Rioja. Its first bottling was released in 1975. Today, El Coto is the leading brand in Spain and among the top-selling Spanish wines in Europe. Five-hundred hectares of estate vineyards are located in La Rioja Alta’s village of Cenicero, near the east bank of the Najerilla River, a tributary of the Ebro. Facing northwest, vineyard soils are mostly ferric clay, sand and limestone, which contribute structure, power and elegant minerality, respectively, to the wines. The recently incorporated Los Almendros estate, shared with Barón de Ley, adds an additional 300 hectares of vineyards to the impressive estate holdings. Additional grapes are sourced from 2,000 hectares in Rioja Alavesa. Here, limestone, clay and stony soils make aromatic, expressive wines with great finesse. With the exception of “Coto Real” Reserva and "Coto de Imaz" Gran Reserva, all reds are aged in new American oak barrels, the classic Rioja marriage of wine and wood. Their seductive cigar box, spice and herbal aromas and silky red fruit flavors are the essence of fine traditional Rioja. - Winery

The wine displays complex, red berry aromas with smoky vanilla notes. On the palate, there's round, warm and juicy spiced red cherry fruit with a velvety character, and ripe tannins are apparent as a firm but pliant structure. The wine's suave tannins and acidity will help the wine mature very well in bottle. - Winery Summary Vinification: El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Reserva is 100% Tempranillo sourced from estate vineyards in the Rioja Alta. The wine is slowly vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for a period of 20-30 days. The wine receives extended skin contact to encourage extraction, balanced tannins and structure, followed by 18 months of aging in new and used American oak and 24 months in bottle prior to release.
