What to Expect

Champagne is specifically a sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France; every other sparkling is simply that, sparkling wine. Made to be aged for a few to many years, in many languages "Champagne" is synonymous with "party". When young, Champagne exhibits the fresh fruit tones of its "cepage", or blend. Usually based on a blend the features either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir as its main ingredient, Champagne's fruit can range from citrusy to orchard fruits and even red berries. The wine gains distinct yeasty notes from its secondary fermentation, the one that adds the fizz, which is typically described as recalling brioche or bread. As it ages Champagne tends to lose its obvious fruit, which is replaced by subtle nutty tones and subdued elements of dried fruits.

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 129, November/December 2006 ($58; disgorged July, 2006) Pale gold. Ripe pear, melon, peach pit and honeysuckle aromas, with a gentle mineral accent. Subtle notes of lees and marzipan complement fresh pear and white peach flavors. A nicely focused, midweight Champagne with a bright citrus peel element carrying through the finish. Vibrant and refined.

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by Vinfolio The 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay blend of this bubbly comes from 35- to 40-year-old vines which are 100% grand cru. The majority of the blend comes from the stellar 2002 vintage (one of the best in the last 20 years) and is a testament to the lush and layered textures of this great vintage. The nose is a wonderland of Meyer lemon curd, biscotti and stone fruit. The mouth assumes the dominating quality of the Pinot Noir with flavors of raspberry, lime blossoms, jasmine and a dusting of peppery peaches. Very long finish of mineral and terroir.
