Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Fresh and focused with ripe-berry and oaky vanilla flavors, this wine maintains the complexity I like in a cabernet, while remaining approachable and fun. The grapes in this wine are 100% organically grown. Proprietor, and 15 year Wine veteran Mark Albrecht produces this wine in Oakville, CA at Napa Wine Company. The label itself is rather unique and shows actual winemaking formulas that are either induced or naturally occur during a specific winemaking process. There are two primary sources for the Educated Guess - Beckstoffer Vineyards in Rutherford, and the Napa Wine Company in Yountville and Oakville, California. Created with the philosophy that superb Napa Valley Cabernet can be affordable, this wine is indistinguishable in quality from its higher-priced Napa Valley competitors.

Educated Guess is a value-priced wine brand created by the Roots Run Deep Winery in Napa Valley, California. The name signifies the various conclusions to be made regarding wine on all fronts. From the winemaking side, decisions must be made about where to grow, what to grow, how to grow it, aging techniques, pricing, packaging, etc. They also considered decisions made by consumers in wine stores and how their personal knowledge plays into that, such as selecting the right wine to match specific foods, knowing which wine presents the most value for the money, knowing a particular grape, region, brand or producer from experience, or even just connecting with a label design. But if you’re unsure what to do in a particular situation, sometimes you just have to go with environmental clues and make an educated guess.    It doesn’t hurt that the label designed for Educated Guess is deliberately eye-catching and clever. It depicts the actual chemical formulas for aspects of winemaking.  Read less

This wine stopped me in my tracks. I've been looking for it ever since downing the two bottles I bought blind at Whole Foods.

I had this without any sort of food pairing and it was the second bottle of the night with a friend. That withstanding, it was still a nicely complex with subtle hints of tobacco and chocolate. Not to mention how awesome a bottle with molecular diagrams is, much less one with corks containing the same. Totally worth the < $20.
