What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

This wine marks the return of Martin & Weyrich to producing wines from the famed Edna Valley appellation. The winery was one of the pioneers in Edna Valley in the early 1980's with its small production of gold medal winning Chardonnays.This Burgundian-styled Chardonnay was hand harvested at full maturity from the Edna Ranch Vineyard. The fruit was whole cluster pressed then barrel fermented and sur lies aged in new and used French oak barriques for eight months before bottling. The aromas and flavors of tropical fruits, and toasted oak will pair well with most rich cream sauces, seafood and poultry dishes.

Edna Valley Chardonnay is noteworthy for its sense of place. As is typical of good Chardonnays, they use techniques such as barrel fermentation, malolactic fermentation, lees stirring and the use of new oak barrels. The goal is to balance these things with the uniqueness that comes from growing Chardonnay at Paragon Vineyard. The wine's smoky aromas of vanilla oak and sweet spice balance the lush white peach and citrus aromas. The white peach and citrus notes and the subtle minerality of the finish are to be respected and even shown off, enhanced by fullness on the palate and length of finish.

This Chardonnay exhibits copious quantities of lemon characteristics along with hints of white peaches, spice, and crisp acidity. This elegant and medium-bodied offering with excellent fruit characteristics and notions of minerality, saw partial malolactic. The wood treatment has been backed off considerably, thus the oak is better integrated than in older vintages.

Although we tend to be red wine drinkers, this is a favorite in my household. Crisp, golden, soft finish, not too oaky or buttery.
