Edmunds St. John Syrah Sonoma County 1988

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tobacco, caper and a little funk and earth here with late arriving tea and lilac, some peppery spice as well. Very Northern Rhone. Little bottle sweetness, fully resolved tannins, a little lean and still has fine red fruit. Fruit is low intensity, but there’s plenty of wild cherry and red currant going on. This really has a sense of delicacy and class. It needs food at this stage as it’s a bit austere and lean. Smells lean but complex with a lovely nuance-filled palate impression. 88pts

Edmunds St. John:
We have little taste for most of the wines of the New World and Australia; however, we greatly admire some of those produced by the "second generation" of California vintners, ... above all, those of the astonishing Steve Edmunds; his wines do more than express the particular personality of the vintner and have entered the arena of those that are an expression of the land and culture.

The nose showed dried cherry, vegetal stems, old cinnamon stick, moss, and hints of old library book. It was ripe and mature at the same time. On the palate, it was soft and velvety with fading blackberry and prunes. The finish was staying and featured sweet blackberry fruit and citrus rinds.

Dust and leather on the nose. Fruity palette with no tannins and a tart finish.

Hints of raisin, honey, anise and tobacco on the nose. Earth and fruit on the palate, subtle tannins. Definitely wanted food, but not without charms on its own.
