Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): The 2009 Vatan Sancerre is one of the ripest examples of the vintage that I tasted from the village of Chavignol, weighing in at a full fifteen percent in alcohol in this year. As folks may remember from the feature on the estate back in August of 2007, Monsieur Vatan has always been a very late harvester, so it is not particularly surprising that the 2009 Clos la Néore would be Herculean in style. The bouquet soars from the glass in a youthful and very ripe mélange of sweet grapefruit, oranges, hard limestone minerality, citrus peel, musky notes, a touch of Chartreuse and orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and beautifully structured, with ripe acids, a rock solid core of fruit, fine focus and balance and absolutely stellar length and grip on the finish. Vatan Sancerres from riper vintages like 1983, 1989, 1997 and 2003 have aged beautifully, so I have no reason to believe that this will not also be the case with the 2009, but in terms of styling, I have a preference for the absolutely classic style of the 2008 over the more dramatic style of the 2009- despite the latter vintage’s absolutely stellar character. 2013-2030+.
