Edgebaston Sauvignon Blanc 2008
The Finlayson family is synonymous with modern era winemaking in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Three generations of Finlayson’s have played a significant role in steering the Cape wine industry in the direction of the international wine world. Current leading Cape winemaker, David Finlayson was born into a winemaking family with his grandfather Dr Maurice Finlayson, a well-known pathologist originally from Inverness in Scotland, having started the family wine business at Hartenberg farm in Koelenhof, Stellenbosch. It was here that his two sons learnt to make wine. First, Walter who was trained as a stockman in Scotland and then Peter took turns at running the farm. David and Walter Finlayson bought the Stellenbosch farm Woodlands which is situated on the fringes of the town along the R44 between Stellenbosch and Klapmuts. The first wines from Woodlands Farm have been named Edgebaston. This Sauvignon Blanc has citrus notes of light, white flowers such as which is obvious on the front of the nose and follows through the palate. Very succulent and poised.

An alluring, aromatic nose of apple, grapefruit and pineapple leads into creamy but crisp flavors of tropical fruit and citrus on the palate. Lively but complex, the wine offers a delicate minerality and food-friendly balance. Elegant and delicate, but big enough to handle more complex dishes.
South African Sauvignon Blancs can definitely compete with some of best found in other parts of the world! The 2008 Edgebaston Sauvignon Blanc is nice and crisp with mineral tones supported by well-balanced fruit and acidity. On the palate, it displays loads of gooseberries and layers of complex aromas and flavors. Perfect summer wine! Excellent for serving with shrimp cocktails and fresh shucked oysters.
Very pure, with a chiseled feel to the white peach, pink grapefruit and chalk notes, which ripple through the pure, stone-tinged finish. Drink now.
Rather mute nose hints at stone fruits, nutmeg, ginger and flowers. Supple, sweet and gingery, with a silky texture more like chardonnay than sauvignon - and showing none of the grassy or gooseberry notes of the latter variety. In a ripe style, finishing a bit dusty and with moderate length.
