Earthworks Wines Shiraz Barossa Valley 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

Vibrant ruby red with crimson hues. A compote of dark berry and satsuma plum aromas supported with mocha, vanilla, and black pepper accents, along with hints of boysenberry and strawberry, all converge to allow your senses to take you on a journey. A voluptuous palate with a flourish of fresh fruit. The aromas are mirrored on the palate that also has dark chocolate undertones and silky tannins in the background.-Winery Notes

This is quite intense on the nose with lovely aromas of violet, iris, black pepper and spicy black fruit that show attractive purity. Air does bring out the oak here, all cedary and cigar box toned and it detracts from the nose a bit for me but I can see many loving the spicy element it reinforces in the wine. Round, open and giving on the palate, this is verging towards fruit bomb territory but it pulls back just in time. While showing fine acid this seems a bit soft and possibly a bit sweet in the mouth with really attractive plum and spicy boysenberry fruit on the palate. Air helps this gain focus and adds lift to some of the aromatics of the nose, introducing floral and faintly meaty accents to the palate. The finish is firm, with nice cut and the acid really pops here, though not unattractively, helping to brighten a late return of blackberry, almost black currant flavor on the finale. 87pts

Dark, earthy and woodsy on the nose with hints of sweet cinnamon, floral herbs, candied spiced lingonberries, a little prune and a nice dusting of white pepper. Very precise on entry, this really has fine balance with polished yet firm tannins and well-integrated acidity supporting earth and cocoa-tinged dried dark fruit on the attack. The mid-palate shows a bit of floral/vegetal brightness along with a little spiced lingonberry red fruit that leads to a clean, fresh if darkly flavored finish that ends with a touch of caramel and some peppery spice notes. Nicely done, a bit chunky fruit but nicely supported. 87pts

Disappointed. No intrigue but instead confusion in nuances.

This is currently my fav bottle of red wine. Just got back from a Napa/Sonoma wine tour and last month a tour in Niagara and cannot find a red that is better!

Sour cherry, earthiness, some bitterness on the finish. tasty, but I've definitely had better Shiraz. Good - 84 points.

Broad and ripe, with a freshness to the plum and berry flavors as they play against crisp tannins and an earthy, minerally bite. Best from 2012 through 2018. 1,500 cases imported. -HS Glass-staining ruby. Pungent aromas of black cherry and plum, with a spicy black pepper quality adding urgency. Nervy and precise, with gently sweet cherry and redcurrant flavors becoming firmer with air. Nicely structured wine with a touch of finishing heat and good spicy persistence. The 2008 Shiraz has a deep garnet-purple color and moderately pronounced warm bramble fruits aromas, though slightly baked, with an undercurrent of anise and earth. Structured in the mouth with medium-firm chewy tannins and high acidity, this concentrated wine gives a long finish with a hint of coffee coming through. Drinking now, it should keep to 2014. ** SOLD OUT **

This is a fantastically complex Shiraz. It has a deep red-purple color, a wonderfully complex nose with notes of Concord grape juice, peppery bacon and smoke, and flavors of pepper, berries, tobacco and fennel. This wine's full body also coats your tongue for a deliciously long finish. To be honest, it made me cry... well not really. But if I were to cry over a wine (tears of joy, not sadness) this would be a good candidate.

The 2006 Shiraz saw an identical regimen of tank and barrel. Purple-colored, it exhibits aromas of smoke, sausage, bacon, and blueberry which jumps from the glass. Medium-bodied, ripe, and sweet with no hard edges, this superb value can be enjoyed over the next 4-6 years.

This Shiraz is spicy and enormous on the palate, bursting with black cherry and red berry fruit which are nicely complimented by toasty oak and hints of peppery spice. Quite a lengthy finish, and the wine itself will last for at least a decade or so.
