Earthworks Shiraz Barossa Valley 2004

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Earthworks is a project meant to showcase the vineyards of many Barossa Valley families. A fine value, this 2004 Shiraz was fashioned from 8ndash;40 year-old vines, and spent six months in used French and American wood. Sporting an ldquo;X-rated capsule, rdquo; it offers a deep ruby/purple color as well as attractive peppery, black cherry, and cassis fruit, a seductive texture, and an easy-going finish. It is ideal for drinking now and over the next several years.

This is a fantastically complex Shiraz. It has a deep red-purple color, a wonderfully complex nose with notes of Concord grape juice, peppery bacon and smoke, and flavors of pepper, berries, tobacco and fennel. This winersquo;s full body also coats your tongue for a deliciously long finish. To be honest, it made me cryhellip; well not really. But if I were to cry over a wine (tears of joy, not sadness) this would be a good candidate.

The 2006 Shiraz saw an identical regimen of tank and barrel. Purple-colored, it exhibits aromas of smoke, sausage, bacon, and blueberry which jumps from the glass. Medium-bodied, ripe, and sweet with no hard edges, this superb value can be enjoyed over the next 4ndash;6 years.

Saturated red. Spicy red berries and cherry on the nose, with tangy mint and camphor qualities adding complexity. Fresh and juicy on the palate, offering wild strawberry and raspberry flavors, vibrant minerality and an exotic peach pit note. A refreshingly clean, brisk style that finishes with good grip and sneaky persistence.

Offers an odd mix of mushroom, beef and purple fruit flavors on the nose. Blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors on the palate are sweet and straightforward.

This Shiraz is spicy and enormous on the palate, bursting with black cherry and red berry fruit which are nicely complimented by toasty oak and hints of peppery spice. Quite a lengthy finish, and the wine itself will last for at least a decade or so.
