Eagles Trace Merlot Napa Valley 2006

Member Review by jtryka:

This wine is a lovely bright ruby in the glass with great clarity. The nose is a lovely combination of black currant, dark chocolate and ripe plum. The taste is wonderfully complex with blackberry, wild herbs, and oak swirling around a base of delicate minerality. The tannins are well integrated creating a wonderfully opulent mouthfeel and a long, smooth finish. The grapes we have been growing here in Conn Valley for over 20 years consistently produce wines with a sense of place . Eagles TraceEagles Trace is an extension of the passion I developed for winemaking over more than 35 years, first as a home winemaker and later after studying grape growing and winemaking in the early 1980's at the University of California at Davis. The name refers to two significant historical themes of the United States. The Eagle became the official National emblem in 1782 when the great seal of the United States was adopted and signified the new country's freedom, strength, and expansion into the future. As the early pioneers expanded westward through the Appalachian Mountains, they found a "trace" or wilderness path through the mountains. Not unlike those early Americans, I set about on a wilderness path to find the way to create one of the world's great wines. Read less

Absolutely one of my favorite wines. Wonderful fruit aromas, beautiful definition on the tongue. The floral bouquet was vibrant and intoxicating with subtle earthy notes and raspberry fruit notes.
