E. Pira Barolo Via Nuova 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

E. Pira & Figli is a very important name in the history ofBarolo. The Pira family, whose members have beenvignerons for generations, started producing and bottlingwine at the end of the 19th century. When the Pira lineageended tragically with the death of Luigi Pira, the estate wassold to the Boschis family of Giacomo Borgogno & Figli.Chiara Boschis took over the reins in 1990 with a clearvision of what she wanted to accomplish - to marry theextraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, enticing elegance, and lush, intense aromas. She vinifiesexclusively from proprietary vineyards, located in the verybest crus of Barolo: Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova, comprising a total of 14 acres. Annual production is aminiscule 2,000 cases. This is truly a rare gem of anestate.

E. Pira & Figli:
Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). Healthy deep red. Sour cherry on the nose lifted by an exotic lilac quality. Silky and elegant with juicy harmonious acidity giving the intense red cherry and floral flavors excellent penetration. Quite youthfully imploded today and impressively high-pitched for the year. The fine-grained tannins are firm without coming off as hard or dry. This structured young Barolo will need patience. 91+ Stephen Tanzers IWC.

A ripe, exotic style, showing black currant, blueberry and cherry flavors. The bright fruit quickly gives way to stiff tannins, yet this is balanced, building to a long, fruit- and spice-filled finish. Very polished. Best from 2014 through 2028. 112 ... Wine Spectator. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2007 E Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Via Nuova 750ml

The 2007 Barolo Via Nuova shows more verve and freshness than the Cannubi, which is not entirely surprising, given the sheltered exposure of this site. A lively vein of minerality supports gorgeous dark berries, flowers, sweet spices, sage and rosema... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The 2007 Barolo Via Nuova shows more verve and freshness than the Cannubi, which is not entirely surprising, given the sheltered exposure of this site. A lively vein of minerality supports gorgeous dark berries, flowers, sweet spices, sage and rosemary. Over time, the wine’s inner perfume blossoms in the glass, the tannins soften a touch and the radiant fruit becomes even more expressive. The generous quality of the vintage as expressed by this wine is truly striking. The Via Nuova is delicious today, and while it is far from a crime to open a bottle today, it will be even better in a few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2022.
