E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Dolcetto d'Alba 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

From vineyards in Monforte Cut plum and melon greets the nose along with a bit of wild berry, some blue earth and herb stem note. This is bright, juicy, pure, and lively on the palate in a lovely fruity, medium bodied style.  Simply the classic medium light sized dolcetto with great acids that delivers simple pure and fresh fruit with a hint of extraction at times but this is absolutely delicious. 89pts

Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). Aged in stainless steel to highlight the big, fruity fragrances of the vintage. Ruby red in the glass with violet reflections. Aromas of Marasca cherries and wild strawberries. Finishes dry, full and fresh with light tannins. - Winery ** SOLD OUT **

The 2009 Dolcetto d'Alba is wonderfully juicy in this vintage, with generous, expressive dark fruit and a plump, engaging personality. It is a winner from proprietor Chiara Boschis, one of Barolo's finest artisan growers. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. This bright Dolcetto d'Alba offers fresh fruit and berry flavors on top of rich concentration and a plush, velvety feel. This is a very easy, uncomplicated wine that will pair with most home-cooked pasta dishes. M.L.

Colored a purple-red, this wine shows a lot of fruit on the nose and on the palate. Notes of black cherry shine through.
