E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Barolo Cannubi is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, new leather and violets all waft from the glass in a refined, impeccable Barolo loaded with class. The 2010 is all about delicacy, finesse and elegance. Sweet, floral and impeccable in its balance, the 2010 is striking from start to finish. This is pure sensuality...94" AG 01/14

Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). Fine almost sweet and slightly jammy boysenberry tinged fruit pops on the nose with wispy smoke and soil notes, a hints of tar and carob adding detail. In the mouth this is seamless, classic Cannubi, with bright acids, fine grained elegant tannins, and inner mouth perfumes of rose petals, wild cherry fruit, and gentle suggest of herbs and burnt orange ring in the mouth. The tannins really build on the finish and are a bit dusty but sweet. There are lovely herb nuances through the chewy, powerful finish along with hints of tart strawberry fruit. 93pts

Ripe fruit that is a touch jammy greets the nose followed by lots of very mineral, limestone notes along with oak that is fairly well integrated already, still obvious but in balance with the raspberry in alcohol fruit. This turns a touch balsamic with air and the oak presence increases a touch with a hint of nuttiness. Smooth, soft, and rather 2009 in the mouth this shows slightly syrupy raspberry and wild cherry fruit, with a Iittle hazelnut accent. There's an underlying sweetness here, though this tightens up on the finish, showing lots of late tannins. Both rather tense and very ripe this is a bit unfocused in the mouth. 89pts

This is showing a fine nose with lovely floral perfumes, a bit of lightly peppery spice, red fruit and a hint of Chinato. There’s a little prune on entry, joined by dry, firm tannins that make this a bit dark and reticent on the palate. It’s made in a firm, masculine style but it’s not a big wine. The beautifully framed fruit has good energy on the finish though late arriving wood tannins add a sapid note. This is firm and seems to be a bit closed, but it has everything in place to be wonderful. 91pts

Tight, floral, complex, savory and very precise on the nose with a light sheen of oak, both new and old topped with sweet rose petals. Bright and vivid in the mouth with rich yet transparent wild cherry fruit, lovely tannins are assertive but in balance allowing the wine to finish with a pretty sweetness augmented by a touch of wood sweetness, this shows the taut, austere elegance of Cannubi very well 93pts

Red currant, red cherry and burnished leather in alcohol come together on the nose along with licorice and something vaguely medicinal and vaguely beefy. There’s a softness here and a gentleness to this wine, which exhibits lovely ripe tannins, nice acid and pretty fruit. Really clear and well-defined style that relies more on bright acids than tannins. This is airy and just lacks a hint of firmness. 90pts

Sweet, powerful, dried cherry fruit, very aromatic, chalk, a bit of Fruit Roll-Up, deep pure rich fruit. Powerful but not weighty, good acids, nice crisp tannins, nice fresh spice in the mouth, nice mineral cut. Very pure, very soil-driven, lively on the palate with good follow-through, lovely crisp tannins, a bit short. (92-94pts)

A bit candied, a bit cola, sort of flat and indistinct, fruity in a dry way, nice mid-palate feel. Nice, wiry, almost herbal red strawberry fruit on mid-palate, a bit simple but refreshing. (84-85pts)

Chiara Boschis is one of the few female winemaker at this level in the Barolo area. Her wines are of great elegance and finesse, especially from her parcel of the Cannubi Cru. The 2004 has a great concentrated bouquet on the nose with fruits, spice & oak. Rich, yet well defined with a classic Character from the Cannubi vineyard. Silky tannins & long finish... A wine for the long run. QC (http://www.questionofwine.blogspot.com)

Chewy, with lots of tannin, but soft. Reasonably balanced.

A wine with wonderful fruit character on the nose and palate with dried strawberries and cherries. Full body, with super well integrated tannins and a velvety texture. Goes on for a long, long time. Better in 2015. James Suckling. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2008 E Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Cannubi 750ml

Good saturated dark red. Cool, scented, balsamic nose offers scents of raspberry, rose petal, musky spices, coffee and minerals. Suave on entry, then floral and brilliantly delineated, with a strongly savory quality and positive peppery acidity con... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
