Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). AWE blind tasting - a little sweeter, a little jammy, smoky herbal, a touch of coffee, a touch of bitter roots, a bit of fizzy acids on the tongue, not much detail, bitterness, perhaps a bit too extracted, tannins are bitter, nice fruit in there but not particularly fresh or elegant, a bit of coffee in the mouth as well, dark fruited finish is moderately long, too tannic. 85-86

Probably on 80% new barrique at this point, maybe 70% but something like that Very low production from before the rain Still shows some new wood on the nose along with tight, fine cherry fruit, almond oak, lots of herbal eucalyptus notes all come together on the slow to build nose. Silky and elegant on the palate with a touch of dry tannins adding an edge of nervousness. This shows a lovely spicy fruit quality, with an incipient sweetness to the core of wild cherry lozenge fruit with its menthol and medical notes. The long finish shows a touch of minerality and a light licorice tone, along with more almond on the finale. 91pts
