E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Nebbiolo: Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 95 "The 2004 Barolo Cannubi possesses superb depth, clarity and inner perfume, with layers of fruit, sweet spices and menthol that develop in the glass as this magical wine gradually reveals its sublime personality and remarkable texture. Well-integrated oak, ripe, silky tannins and a finish that lasts forever round out this beautiful wine, which was simply stunning on both occasions I tasted it."

Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). Bottle open for 1 day Very clean and pure on the nose with pure rose, slightly foxy red berry fruit and licorice then refreshing mineral/sand/limestone notes. Like walking through sandy soil in a garden after a rain. 3 Elegant in the mouth with a round feel that integrates fine acidity and very ripe tannins 3 The flavors of dark cherry are just a bit fudgy/stewy but with good, refreshing herbal top notes 2+ Finishes with lovely transparency and good grip 2+ 91pts

A big, fruity nose starts out with classic cherry in alcohol notes then a bit of prune plum, freshly cut herbs, salty mineral notes some prosciutto hints and layers of floral and forest floor tones. Great nose 3+ Big and full in the mouth with big, round tannins and very well integrated acidity 3 Slightly bitter on entry then a blast of dark cherry almost confiture of strawberry fruit with an edge of melon rind. Fairly spicy with a touch of espresso crema. 2+ Really muscular finish with a broad and deep quality to the red berried fruit and a lovely bitter cherry pit tone to the finale 3 93pts

Just opened Grassy and earth on the nose, reticent with a slatey sort of smokiness and gentle tones of smoldering hay and a menthol top note 2+ Smooth in the mouth with excellent integration, a balanced, seamless feel 3 Fresh fruit tones with good cut added by fresh herbal notes. An array of sweet notes from licorice, to violet, a touch of red apple2+ Very gentle tannins on the ethereal finish with its appealing soil tones and flourishes of menthol and tobacco 3 91pts

Open from yesterday Wild and intense notes of ass, soil, a little egg, a hint of carrot/beet vegetal sweetness, and a creamy almost black cherry fruitiness on the nose. Opulent and bright in the mouth with very ripe tannins, very ripe yet clear fruit and great follow through on the palate. Bright and decisive in the mouth this exhibits good energy though a little older wood note lingers on the nose and there are still wood tannins here obscuring the finish. 92pts

Chiara Boschis is one of the few female winemaker at this level in the Barolo area. Her wines are of great elegance and finesse, especially from her parcel of the Cannubi Cru. The 2004 has a great concentrated bouquet on the nose with fruits, spice & oak. Rich, yet well defined with a classic Character from the Cannubi vineyard. Silky tannins & long finish... A wine for the long run. QC (http://www.questionofwine.blogspot.com)

This beautiful wine is clean and pure on the nose with pure rose, slightly dazzling red berry fruit and licorice then refreshing mineral notes. This generates an elegant mouth with a round feel that integrates fine acidity and very ripe tannins, as well as, flavors of dark cherry but with good, refreshing herbal top notes and finishing with lovely transparency.
