E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2001

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is just packed with jammy blackberry fruit on the nose that shows a touch of a spicy aspect but is pretty simple, if intense. Loose in the mouth and fruity but this lacks both structure and complexity. There’s a bit of attractive herbaceousness on the backend and this is easy to drink but it’s a bit shallow overall. 83pt

Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). Beautifully silky and refined, with fantastic cherry, mineral and raspberry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, amazing finish. Keeps going. Superfresh. Chiara Boschis took over the Pira winery in 1990 and this is her best wine to date. Best after 2010.

Bright red-ruby. Musky, complex nose combines mocha, menthol, espresso and brown spices, with sexy oak tones. Quite lush and suave on the palate, with raspberry, brown spice and gamey flavors conveying an enticing, subtle sweetness. Very silky Barolo, finishing firmly tannic and impressively long.

The 2000 Cannubi, not unexpectedly, is more sizeable than the Via Nuova, but it is also more complex on the nose with notes of mint and caramel along with the roses and tar. Elegant but well sustained and with polished tannins which add to the depth and length, it will last until 2015-2016.

Wild and funky with an exotic undertone. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Gorgeous and seductive. Best after 2006.

(this note is for an approximate blend of Boschisandrsquo;s two parcels in Cannubi, which she refers to as Cannubi and Cannubi San Lorenzo; I also tasted these components separately) Full deep red. Raspberry, currant, violet, dried rose and minerals on the nose, with the oak component in the background. Very intense, nicely delineated, fruit-driven flavors of cherry and raspberry. A classy blend that shows lovely clarity. (The Cannubi sample was much more tightly wound and austere, and dominated by its tannic spine, while the Cannubi San Lorenzo was more perfumed, expressive and opulent, with broader, sweeter tannins. But the blend seems more complete than either component.) The oak is apparent only on the finish, which features solid, toothdusting tannins.

Chiara Boschis's 2000 Barolo Cannubi, from magnum, has aged gracefully. It remains fresh, vibrant and loaded with Cannubi character. Sweet, silky tannins frame red fruit, spices and minerals, all of which emerge from this effortless, beautifully balanced Barolo. The finish is elegant and round, with pretty scents of French oak that add nuance and complexity. The magnum format has clearly helped maintain freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
