Part of a mini France vs Italy tasting. Grenache (60%), Mourvedre (30%), and Syrah (10%) predominate, similar to Chateauneuf Du Pape. This had savory notes of leather, meaty and earthiness with dirt. It was plum with a certain savory characteristics to it. Fulled bodied with not much residual, it was slightly vegetal and had a mineral finish. Pours an inky dark violet color with nice reddish hues around the edges. Big nose of plums and blackberry jam. Starts off with a big amount of plums and blackberries. In the middle, the fruit lightens a tad with some blueberry and some undertones of vanilla. Finishes with lots of black and blueberry jam flavors. This is a full bodied red wine that should be aged a longer. Nice tannic structure. Leaves a moderately long lingering taste on the palate. Had this with some grilled ribeyes.

A great example of a well made Rhone Rosé from a quality producer. Strikes a beautiful balance of fresh fruit flavors and acidity. A juicy Rosé to enjoy with food or on its own. The 2007 is still fresh and lively in August 2009.

The best Gigondas from Guigal that I have ever tasted will certainly be the 2007, which is still aging in tank and large wood vats. His general blend here is about 55–60% Grenache, around one-third Mourvedre and the rest Syrah. This remarkable Gigondas is scheduled to be bottled within the next several months. Dense plum/purple, with notes of garrigue, crushed rock, blueberry, and black raspberries, the wine is full-bodied, with stunning purity, a multi-layered texture, and a long finish. It should drink nicely for 10–15+ years.
