E Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2005

WA 89pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: A blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache, the 2005 Cotes du Rhone is a real head turner. Full-bodied, with a deep ruby/purple color and sweet notes of berry fruit, a hint of road tar, and some pepper, the wine is dense, chewy, ripe, and a surprisingly big mouthful of juicy, velvety-textured wine to drink over the next 3-4 years. The Rhone Valley's most successful producer continues to ratchet up the level of quality of his Cotes du Rhone cuvees, of which he produces hundreds of thousands of cases. Both Marcel Guigal and his son Philippe realize how important read more...quality is and demonstrate that commitment in these lower level wines. Bought this bottle after a tasting of red and white half bottles. On the nose I was hit with strong berry/cherry notes, and a hint of light vanilla and oddly enough, tar. In the mouth it tasted bright and young, which makes sense as I was told it would age well over the next 3-4 years. Overall a very drinkable wine on its own, and the half-bottle size is perfect for an evening in alone!

For me, it's hard to divorce a wine's price when I attempt to rate it. In my opinion, the price of the wine can serve as context in which to approach the wine from a critical perspective. With regard to this wine, which I very much enjoyed, the relatively low price (I paid around $13) ultimately increases its rating. If this wine cost $50 I might be disappointed, but at anything less than $20, I wish I'd bought a case. I concur with the tasting notes of the previous reviewers concerning the specific characteristics of the wine. Nice fruit, chewy, ripe, with a really interesting tar aroma.

Kräftige rote Farbe, glanzklar. Nase von schwarzen Beeren mit würzigen Noten. Vollmundiger, rassiger Wein mit runden, eingebundenen Taninen. Ein Wein mit Fülle und intensiven Aromen.

Red berries, earth, vanilla, pencil shavings, barnyard and tar on the nose. Palate is juicy, fresh and young with juicy red berries and pepper, full bodied and hearty, with firm, long lasting tannins. Great buy for the price.
