What to Expect
The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.
Winemakers Notes
"80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre and others from 45 year-old vines. A deep dark red in the glass with aromas of spices and mature red fruits. In the mouth, round tannins with powerful complexity. A rich unctuous wine with notes of mature plums, hazelnuts and red fruits. A very rich wine full of harmony and balance. Serve with: Red meat, game bird and cheese. "

Nose is all about the barn yard. There's a little dookie in the mix. The texture is lush but a bit like rare meat. There is almost a blood component to it. There is a presence of rasberry on the fruit side. This is not a wine that fruit bombers are going to dig. I like the style. If there is one complaint it is that the wine is a little dis-jointed and all over the place. I think it might settle down in the bottle over the next couple...

Wine & Spirits ReviewRated 95Guigal is best known for its legendary Cote-Rotie and Hermitage, but the 2003 Chateauneuf-du-Pape fully deserves a place alongside its more renowned siblings, with elegant refinement and subtle, soil-driven intensity. Its dark, pungent flavors of black cherry and spiced plum are richly prominent, constantly referring back to a deeply gripping minerality that tethers the complex aromas of fruit, spice, fresh meat and black tea. It feels like a sphere, seamless and harmonious, staining the palate with its long, fragrant length.Wine Advocate ReviewRated read more...
