What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Fine Wines

Earthy, spicy, smooth and velvety, but not especially round or rich. Has some lovely pear, apricot and nutmeg aromas and flavors, but finishes a bit dry and perfunctory. Also a little alcoholic and acidic on the finish. Drinkable now.--Yquem vertical... Wine Spectator. A Sauternes Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1970 Yquem, Chateau d' 750ml

WA 90 (11/1984): Somewhat less evolved than the 1971, and for me always a shade less interesting and complex, the 1970 Yquem is a large-scaled, rich, full-bodied, fairly alcoholic Yquem with significant flavor interest as well as crisp acidity. Unlike the 1971, which is close to peak maturity, this wine has a long way to go and is impressive, but not yet revealing all of its potential. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025.
