Dutton Ranch 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Starting out with great red cherry and raspberry fruit then shifting into more herbal, spicy aromas of fresh tobacco leaf, green olives, and straw, the nose of our 2007 Dutton Pinot Noir seems to wash back and forth as it opens over time, showing some segments of its complexity one moment and others the next. Some whiffs are lifted and expressive, while others are a bit more muted and earthy, making for an intriguing aromatic experience. On the palate, it is all about fruit, with bright red cherry and raspberry, fruit preserves, and even fruit and violet pastilles, along with hints of the herbal, spicy elements listed above. Good tannic structure helps to support the lush fruit character, and after a slight drop off, the finish actually builds back up and lengthens to carry the fruit further along the back of the palate

In 2000 Roger Roessler, a longtime restaurateur with projects spread across the western part of the country, and his brother Richard, an electrical engineer and hobbyist winemaker, created Roessler Cellars, dedicated primarily to the kind of food-friendly Pinot Noir on which Roger had built wine lists for his restaurants. Roger’s restaurant interests included a share in the historic Swiss Hotel on Sonoma’s town square, where the Sangiacomo family, Carneros’ largest independent grape growers, were regular customers. When it occurred to Roger that he might like to make wine, Angelo Sangiacomo did not hesitate to offer him four and a half tons of pinot noir. On the strength of this offer, the brothers formed the winery, enlisted Wells Guthrie of Copain Wines as their winemaker, and began an expansion that encompassed, just seven years later, no fewer than eleven acclaimed and award winning vineyard-designated pinots sourced from Willamette Valley to the Santa Rita Hills, five appellation pinots with proprietary names, and a dribble of chardonnay. The Roesslers purchased forty acres near Annapolis, in the Sonoma Coast, and fourteen acres in Carneros, where they began planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2003. With offices on the beautiful plaza in Sonoma, The winemaking is now headed up by full time winemaker Scott Shapley, who is Guthrie’s brother in law and Roessler Cellars has become one of the premiere producers of hand crafted Pinot Noirs in the U.S. sourcing fruit from many of the finest coastal vineyards. This quintessential Russian River Pinot starts off with an earthy edge to the sweet dark cherry fruit then gains nice spice notes with a hint of raw meat then a touch of beet root and dried herbs. Big and mouth filling with explosive flavors of dark berry fruits, cocoa, and earthy spice notes. It finishes a bit short but there is a sneaky return of toast, currant jam and cocoa that lingers on the palate. This needs a bit of time to flesh out on the backend but is rich with the balance to age well Drink 2010-2016 92pts

Mild raspberry nose, citric body, very well balanced.

A bit of a muted nose, but there were some black fruit and savory spices here, particularly oregano. A bit tight and could benefit with some more time in the bottle as this is a baby.
