Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit tanky on the nose still, this is tight and nuanced with very fine if slightly nutty oak-driven today. Air brings out a hint of grassiness, then a little blue fruit that shows fine ripeness with an edge of sweetness, dried herb notes that really build on the nose and a hint of roast coffee bean. Wow, this is stunningly well-balanced and packed with dark and powerful fruit that shows lighter shadings of strawberry and raspberry accenting the core of black fruit with lovely nuanced wood spice following on the back end. The finish reveals layers of dusty tannins covered with black cherry fruit, which just builds in intensity and length. This is powerful and seamless. 96 points

Smoky and deep on the nose with alot of oak showing but lots of muscular, extracted fruit too. This is super TIGHT in the mouth with big structure showing excellent balance but this is all about potential at this point so I'll give it a conservative 90pts with the warning not to touch this for another 5 years at bare minimum!

At eight years, the tannins in this wine still provide some structure, but without being overpowering. Blackberry, plum, and some mineral notes - possibly graphite. Color is a dark ruby. About a 10-15 second finish. If you like classic bordeaux style wines, this is elegant and restrained in the same way. I'd give it a 92 on the Parker type grading scale.

Plummy, ripe, cassis, raspberry nose. All finesse and elegance on the palate, the red fruits, acid, and tannin work very well together as one, balanced to the point where no component stands above the others. Medium + in length with mellow intensity, just egging you to take that next sip of a very precise wine. Some say Dunn's take decades to reach maturity, but this tastes like it's in its prime to me.

Wonderful deep crimson color with purple tinged edges. The nose was restrained with some dark cherries and currant, while showing a little ripeness. Upon entering the mouth this wine was beautifully integrated with some secondary notes of tar and cedar. All the dark fruits were present. A great seamless tannin level had delivered this nicely to age 8. A smooth even finish completed the package. This had shown very nicely considering the reputation Dunn Howell has received for being a 20 year wine.Enjoy one if you have any.

Open oer 24 hours and I got the last bit, so I believe oxygen robbed me of this experience. Nose of stewed red berry and currant. Tomato leaf and red berry compote aromas. Oxidation setting in. All red currant and stewed red fruit with some herbs.

The flagship wine comes from their high elevation vineyards on Howell Mountain. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain possesses stunning minerality as well as sweet notes of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries and blackberries. Thick, unctuously textured and full-bodied with terrific concentration and density, it should drink well for two decades.

Saturated ruby-red. A black hole of a nose, hinting at blackberry, medicinal black cherry and menthol. Quite perfumed in the mouth but youthfully tight in spite of its velvety texture, conveying terrific intensity and lift to the flavors of boysenberry, blackberry, redcurrant, minerals and black pepper. Really outstanding saline depth here. A great young Dunn Howell Mountain in the making: it’s built for long aging but there’s nothing hard about it in the early going.

Bright, deep ruby-red. Finer and higher-pitched on the nose than the Napa Valley bottling, offering perfumed scents of cassis, blueberry, blackberry, licorice, violet and bitter chocolate:  a clear expression of Howell Mountain cabernet. A step up in sweetness and depth from the Napa Valley release, offering superb intensity and excellent clarity and lift to the primary, highly concentrated dark berry flavors. This very densely packed, long wine is built for a slow evolution in bottle and may very well ultimately merit an even higher rating. Tannins are substantial but broad and fine.

This delivers a tight beam of rich, complex flavors, with currant, black licorice, loamy earth, cedar and tobacco leaf notes that expand on the finish, where this maintains its focus and gains length. The tannins are firm, yet this is approachable. Best from 2014 through 2025.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has more energy and focus than the Napa Valley bottling. Iron, graphite, red fruits, dried flowers are some of the many notes that take shape in this deep, complex, powerful wine. I imagine the 2009 will still be spectacular at age 30. For now, it needs at least another handful of years of cellaring to drink well. Huge veins of minerality support the huge fruit, giving the wine much of its pure tension and vitality. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming decades. Anticipated maturity: 2019–2039.

A huge, towering wine packed with dark fruit, licorice, tar, asphalt and licorice. Layers of perfume are woven throughout this majestic effort. The 2008 should only be purchased by the very patient, but it is a legendary wine in the making.
