Tight and muscular if a little floral on the nose, with dark cherry and a bit of blackberry wrapped in nuances of leather, roasted nuts and vanilla, topped with savory herbaceous and earthy complexity. Tight on the palate as well, yet with very fine balance. There’s a little bit of herb on the attack and while the mid-palate is a little compressed at this point the back end reveals beautiful blackberry and blackcurrant fruit gaining some olive notes on the finish. This shows nice, succulent, dense fruit supported by tight-grained, ripe tannins and fine supporting acidity. 95 points

This is super TIGHT in the mouth with big structure showing excellent balance but this is all about potential at this point so I'll give it a conservative 90pts with the warning not to touch this for another 5 years at bare minimum!
My 6th place wine/Groups 5th place wine Lean and leafy on the nose with a touch of sweet cassis fruit and a hint of banana and oak that barely prevented this from being dull and un-interesting. In the mouth this is gentle and elegant with a simple yet pure core of sweet red currant fruit edged with a touch of vanilla. This finishes with a bit of black cherry bitterness that refreshes the palate a touch. 88pts
My 2nd place wine/ Groups 6th place wine A little light on the nose but with wonderful tones of light green herbs, mineral, iron, milk chocolate and sweet, dusty red cherry fruit. In the mouth this was rich,. Elegant and layered with a transparency and precision that set it apart from the other wines offered tonight. It also was the most tannic wine and in more ways than one seemed to be the wine most likely to develop with additional cellaring. The spicy, earthy notes of pipe tobacco and chewy texture added interest to the lovely red cherry fruit in the mouth and left an overall impression of a rugged wine with fine balance. 94pts

Nicely done - very balanced with a lot of interesting layers of flavor - big fruit, but chalkiness kicks in 1/2 way through and softens through to the finish - overall a wonderful wine that drinks great now or will continue to age.
This was my first experience with a Dunn and one that I hopes keeps happening for years to come. This has layers of complexity with an outstanding eternal finish
Wonderful deep crimson color with purple tinged edges. The nose was restrained with some dark cherries and currant, while showing a little ripeness. Upon entering the mouth this wine was beautifully integrated with some secondary notes of tar and cedar. All the dark fruits were present. A great seamless tannin level had delivered this nicely to age 8. A smooth even finish completed the package. This had shown very nicely considering the reputation Dunn Howell has received for being a 20 year wine.Enjoy one if you have any.
This is the first seriously aged Dunn Cabernet I've ever tasted. I tasted a few young ones back in the late 80's, which were all (a) powerful and promising and (b) utterly tannic and unexpressive at the time I tasted them. The 1986 Napa Cab, though, is "finally" coming around at a mere 23 years of age. Rich, round, dense, with deep, classic cassis fruit and touches of berry fruit, cedar, and smoke. Still totally youthful in color, wonderfully balanced, and no longer wildly tannic; nonetheless there's no question this one will still be drinking well in 10 years. If anything the wine seems still a touch monolithic and in the process of developing more perfume and complexity. Unfortunately it's extremely unlikely I'll ever taste another one! (This one was graciously shared by a very good friend from his cellar.)

The newest vintage of Napa Valley Cabernet from Randy Dunn, the 2009 cabernet is sure to be a high scorer. The previous vintages scored as follows: 2006=94 Pts , 2007=95 Pts, and 2008=96 Pts ...yup, I think it's gonna be a good one.

According to Robert Parker: Having closely followed Dunn's Cabernet Sauvignons since the debut 1979 vintage, it is remarkable how consistent these wines have been. Dunn's great early successes, especially the 1982s, were followed by a succession of rich, tannic wines in 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987, two tough years in 1988 and 1989, and, as with most northern California wineries, an unprecedented run of great years starting in 1990.
