Tight and muscular if a little floral on the nose, with dark cherry and a bit of blackberry wrapped in nuances of leather, roasted nuts and vanilla, topped with savory herbaceous and earthy complexity. Tight on the palate as well, yet with very fine balance. There’s a little bit of herb on the attack and while the mid-palate is a little compressed at this point the back end reveals beautiful blackberry and blackcurrant fruit gaining some olive notes on the finish. This shows nice, succulent, dense fruit supported by tight-grained, ripe tannins and fine supporting acidity. 95 points
earthy and refined on the nose with plenty of nicely integrated oak framing candied black cherry and black raspberry fruit. Nutty nuances and a fine green olive note add attractive complexity. Smells like old school cabernet. Hard in the mouth and tannic, though well balanced with earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. This is powerful and a bit tight today, with tannins lending an earthy edge to the fruit. This should continue to improve. 92pts
Nicely done - very balanced with a lot of interesting layers of flavor - big fruit, but chalkiness kicks in 1/2 way through and softens through to the finish - overall a wonderful wine that drinks great now or will continue to age.
This was my first experience with a Dunn and one that I hopes keeps happening for years to come. This has layers of complexity with an outstanding eternal finish
I was a little disspointed when we decanted the bottle. Maybe a little past its prime. I did open up into a beautiful, full bodied experience after a couple of hours reminding me of a classic French burgundy.

The newest vintage of Napa Valley Cabernet from Randy Dunn, the 2009 cabernet is sure to be a high scorer. The previous vintages scored as follows: 2006=94 Pts , 2007=95 Pts, and 2008=96 Pts ...yup, I think it's gonna be a good one.

Highly reliant on green, cedary oak for its flavor, this tight, tannic, intense youngster finds enough ripe fruit to counter the wood, with hints of earthy currant, bell pepper, sage and tar. Requires patience. Best from 2003 through 2009.
Dunnrsquo;s normal policy is to select the Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from his barrels right before bottling. Hence what I tasted was a trial blend of this wine. This year produced extremely small crops characterized by extremely cool growing seasons as well as unusually late harvests. Dunn dropped 30% of the crop in order to guarantee ripeness in his vineyard. There is no astringent tannin or vegetal characteristic to be found in this full-bodied, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.
If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be? Anyone who has regularly tasted Randy Dunnrsquo;s Cabernet Sauvignons (first produced in 1979) realizes several things. They all possess the following characteristics: (1) remarkable color and richness, (2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, (3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential. Last year I reported on a tasting where all of Dunnrsquo;s top wines back through the 1982 vintage were served. Remarkably, they had hardly budged in development, yet they were still exceptionally rich in their pure creme de cassis, black raspberry, and blackberry fruit notes. These are obviously more than 20ndash;25 year wines. It is not far-fetched to suggest that Randy Dunn is producing Cabernet Sauvignons that, in top vintages, will be fresh, lively, and rich in fruit at age 50. Unbelievably, Randy Dunn has barely raised his prices in the two decades he has been making wine. For those with patience, these are among the finest values in long-lived, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
