Editorial Reviews for Dunn Napa Cabernet
Tight and muscular if a little floral on the nose, with dark cherry and a bit of blackberry wrapped in nuances of leather, roasted nuts and vanilla, topped with savory herbaceous and earthy complexity. Tight on the palate as well, yet with very fine balance. There’s a little bit of herb on the attack and while the mid-palate is a little compressed at this point the back end reveals beautiful blackberry and blackcurrant fruit gaining some olive notes on the finish. This shows nice, succulent, dense fruit supported by tight-grained, ripe tannins and fine supporting acidity. 95 points
earthy and refined on the nose with plenty of nicely integrated oak framing candied black cherry and black raspberry fruit. Nutty nuances and a fine green olive note add attractive complexity. Smells like old school cabernet. Hard in the mouth and tannic, though well balanced with earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. This is powerful and a bit tight today, with tannins lending an earthy edge to the fruit. This should continue to improve. 92pts
Nicely done - very balanced with a lot of interesting layers of flavor - big fruit, but chalkiness kicks in 1/2 way through and softens through to the finish - overall a wonderful wine that drinks great now or will continue to age.
This was my first experience with a Dunn and one that I hopes keeps happening for years to come. This has layers of complexity with an outstanding eternal finish
I was a little disspointed when we decanted the bottle. Maybe a little past its prime. I did open up into a beautiful, full bodied experience after a couple of hours reminding me of a classic French burgundy.

The newest vintage of Napa Valley Cabernet from Randy Dunn, the 2009 cabernet is sure to be a high scorer. The previous vintages scored as follows: 2006=94 Pts , 2007=95 Pts, and 2008=96 Pts ...yup, I think it's gonna be a good one.
Dunns 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is loaded with blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, asphalt, melted road tar and smoke. A dark, juicy wine, the 2009 is surprisingly open for a young Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon. In this vintage, Dunns Lake Vin... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is simply extraordinary. Layers of dark fruit, flowers, licorice, spices and mint are beautifully woven together. With time in the glass the wine's striking inner perfume takes center stage. Tar, smoke, flowers... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Saturated full ruby. Roasted aromas of blackcurrant and black raspberry. Suppler and denser than the rsquo;99, showing more breadth and depth of fruit today. Finishes with chewy, ripe tannins and a chocolatey quality. Another barrel destined for the Howell Mountain bottling: Complex aromas of black raspberry, violet, bitter chocolate, minerals and leather. Juicy and harmonious in the mouth; dense, broad and sweet, but also possesses good spine and verve. Ripe tannins spread out to cover the entire palate. This should be very strong for the vintage. (Dunn had 20% more crop in 2000 than in rsquo;99 but on my late winter tour the 2000 samples came across as sweeter, more harmonious and more complete.)
I donrsquo;t know whether itrsquo;s me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunnrsquo;s wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with his style. However, the tannins are softer and the wines reveal surprisingly developed aromatics. The 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon should last for 20ndash;25 years. It is a brilliant achievement.
If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be? Anyone who has regularly tasted Randy Dunnrsquo;s Cabernet Sauvignons (first produced in 1979) realizes several things. They all possess the following characteristics: (1) remarkable color and richness, (2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, (3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential. Last year I reported on a tasting where all of Dunnrsquo;s top wines back through the 1982 vintage were served. Remarkably, they had hardly budged in development, yet they were still exceptionally rich in their pure creme de cassis, black raspberry, and blackberry fruit notes. These are obviously more than 20ndash;25 year wines. It is not far-fetched to suggest that Randy Dunn is producing Cabernet Sauvignons that, in top vintages, will be fresh, lively, and rich in fruit at age 50. Unbelievably, Randy Dunn has barely raised his prices in the two decades he has been making wine. For those with patience, these are among the finest values in long-lived, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
