Editorial Reviews for Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Tight and muscular if a little floral on the nose, with dark cherry and a bit of blackberry wrapped in nuances of leather, roasted nuts and vanilla, topped with savory herbaceous and earthy complexity. Tight on the palate as well, yet with very fine balance. There’s a little bit of herb on the attack and while the mid-palate is a little compressed at this point the back end reveals beautiful blackberry and blackcurrant fruit gaining some olive notes on the finish. This shows nice, succulent, dense fruit supported by tight-grained, ripe tannins and fine supporting acidity. 95 points
earthy and refined on the nose with plenty of nicely integrated oak framing candied black cherry and black raspberry fruit. Nutty nuances and a fine green olive note add attractive complexity. Smells like old school cabernet. Hard in the mouth and tannic, though well balanced with earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. This is powerful and a bit tight today, with tannins lending an earthy edge to the fruit. This should continue to improve. 92pts
My 2nd place wine/ Groups 6th place wine A little light on the nose but with wonderful tones of light green herbs, mineral, iron, milk chocolate and sweet, dusty red cherry fruit. In the mouth this was rich,. Elegant and layered with a transparency and precision that set it apart from the other wines offered tonight. It also was the most tannic wine and in more ways than one seemed to be the wine most likely to develop with additional cellaring. The spicy, earthy notes of pipe tobacco and chewy texture added interest to the lovely red cherry fruit in the mouth and left an overall impression of a rugged wine with fine balance. 94pts
My 6th place wine/Groups 5th place wine Lean and leafy on the nose with a touch of sweet cassis fruit and a hint of banana and oak that barely prevented this from being dull and un-interesting. In the mouth this is gentle and elegant with a simple yet pure core of sweet red currant fruit edged with a touch of vanilla. This finishes with a bit of black cherry bitterness that refreshes the palate a touch. 88pts
Nicely done - very balanced with a lot of interesting layers of flavor - big fruit, but chalkiness kicks in 1/2 way through and softens through to the finish - overall a wonderful wine that drinks great now or will continue to age.
This was my first experience with a Dunn and one that I hopes keeps happening for years to come. This has layers of complexity with an outstanding eternal finish
This is the first seriously aged Dunn Cabernet I've ever tasted. I tasted a few young ones back in the late 80's, which were all (a) powerful and promising and (b) utterly tannic and unexpressive at the time I tasted them. The 1986 Napa Cab, though, is "finally" coming around at a mere 23 years of age. Rich, round, dense, with deep, classic cassis fruit and touches of berry fruit, cedar, and smoke. Still totally youthful in color, wonderfully balanced, and no longer wildly tannic; nonetheless there's no question this one will still be drinking well in 10 years. If anything the wine seems still a touch monolithic and in the process of developing more perfume and complexity. Unfortunately it's extremely unlikely I'll ever taste another one! (This one was graciously shared by a very good friend from his cellar.)
I was a little disspointed when we decanted the bottle. Maybe a little past its prime. I did open up into a beautiful, full bodied experience after a couple of hours reminding me of a classic French burgundy.

The newest vintage of Napa Valley Cabernet from Randy Dunn, the 2009 cabernet is sure to be a high scorer. The previous vintages scored as follows: 2006=94 Pts , 2007=95 Pts, and 2008=96 Pts ...yup, I think it's gonna be a good one.
Dunns 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is loaded with blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, asphalt, melted road tar and smoke. A dark, juicy wine, the 2009 is surprisingly open for a young Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon. In this vintage, Dunns Lake Vin... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is simply extraordinary. Layers of dark fruit, flowers, licorice, spices and mint are beautifully woven together. With time in the glass the wine's striking inner perfume takes center stage. Tar, smoke, flowers... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Dunnrsquo;s normal policy is to select the Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from his barrels right before bottling. Hence what I tasted was a trial blend of this wine. This year produced extremely small crops characterized by extremely cool growing seasons as well as unusually late harvests. Dunn dropped 30% of the crop in order to guarantee ripeness in his vineyard. There is no astringent tannin or vegetal characteristic to be found in this full-bodied, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.
The powerful, strong 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain may turn out to be richer and fuller than either the 2001 or 2002, an atypical scenario. Its dense blue/purple color is followed by a big, rich nose of cassis, blueberries, minerals, and flowers. Rich, full-bodied, and powerfully tannic, it is classic Dunn stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2030.
Dark and intense, with a tight, compact, tightly wound band of earth, anise, leather, game meat, currant and blackberry, revealing layers of complexity and concentration before the tannins and cedary oak clamp down. Needs time. Best from 2005 through 2014.
