The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa may be the lightest example I have tasted since Randy Dunn began making his blockbuster Cabs in 1979. It possesses a deep ruby/purple color, medium body, moderate levels of cassis fruit, and a tight, hard, narrow finish that will never flesh out. Although it will hold up for 10-12 years, there is clearly a lack of intensity/substance to this otherwise cleanly made lightweight.
The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (a composite blend) is highly-extracted, but very light. It obviously reflects the challenges presented by this vintage. Dry tannin in the finish might turn out to be a cause for concern, but there is still plenty of cassis fruit in this medium to full-bodied Cabernet, but it is more compressed than usual. Dunn will undoubtedly build more flesh and fruit into it before bottling, but we will have to wait another year to find out. If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be?
Opaque dark purple color. Moderately full-bodied. Highly extracted. Quite tannic. Cassis, blackberries, earth, balck tea. Very impressive tightly wound flavors have all the classic hallmarks of the varietal. Inky, tight mid-palate with great supporting tannins through the finish should give this a long cellar life.
The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which all comes from Howell Mountain, possesses deep, dark, primordial, blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with notes of flowers and minerals. It is impressively built, rich, and intense with the gorgeous fruit purity evident in all the Dunn Cabernets. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+.
The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of pure cassis and blackberries with flinty notions in the background. Full-bodied, powerful, tannic. pure and backward, it needs another 8-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035+.
A dense, chewy, muscular wine marked by pencil lead, currant, cedar, mineral, iodine and dill flavors. Tightly wound and immense, and sufficiently tannic to cellar for up to a decade. Best from 2005 through 2012.
Deep ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice and violet. Juicy, supple and sweet, with an intense cassis and tart red berry fruitiness complicated by cocoa powder, licorice, fresh herbs and tree bark. Bright acids give this highly ... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
