Notes on the Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 94 Pts Robert Parker : WINEMAKER NOTES: Dunn Vineyards produces two labels, Howell Mountain and Napa Valley. Both wines are one hundred percent cabernet sauvignon. We produce around 2500 cases of Howell Mountain and about 1500 cases of Napa Valley. The Howell Mountain wines consist of one hundred percent Howell Mountain fruit. The Napa Valley wines include up to 15% Napa Valley floor fruit with the remainder of the fruit coming from Howell Mountain. I don't know whether it's me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunn's wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with his style. However, the tannins read more...

Nicely done - very balanced with a lot of interesting layers of flavor - big fruit, but chalkiness kicks in 1/2 way through and softens through to the finish - overall a wonderful wine that drinks great now or will continue to age.
