Smells like old school cabernet. Hard in the mouth and tannic, though well balanced with earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. This is powerful and a bit tight today, with tannins lending an earthy edge to the fruit. This should continue to improve. 92pts

This was my first experience with a Dunn and one that I hopes keeps happening for years to come. This has layers of complexity with an outstanding eternal finish

WA 94pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: I don t know whether it s me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunn s wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with his style. However, the tannins are softer and the wines reveal surprisingly developed aromatics. The 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon should last for 20-25 years. It is a brilliant achievement. rated 90+
If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be? Anyone who has regularly tasted Randy Dunn's Cabernet Sauvignons (first produced in 1979) realizes several things. They all possess the following characteristics: (1) remarkable color and richness, (2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, (3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential. Last year I reported on a tasting where all of Dunn's top wines back through the 1982 vintage were served. Remarkably, they had hardly budged in development, yet they were still exceptionally rich in their pure creme de cassis, black raspberry, and blackberry fruit notes. These are obviously more than 20-25 year wines. It is not far-fetched to suggest that Randy Dunn is producing Cabernet Sauvignons that, in top vintages, will be fresh, lively, and rich in fruit at age 50. Unbelievably, Randy Dunn has barely raised his prices in the two decades he has been making wine. For those with patience, these are among the finest values in long-lived, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
Bright ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry, currant, underbrush and sweet oak, with medicinal and roasted nuances. The powerful, strong 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain may turn out to be richer and fuller than either the 2001 or 2002, an atypical scenario. Its dense blue/purple color is followed by a big, rich nose of cassis, blueberries, minerals, and flowers. Rich, full-bodied, and powerfully tannic, it is classic Dunn stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.

Saturated full ruby. Roasted aromas of blackcurrant and black raspberry. Suppler and denser than the '99, showing more breadth and depth of fruit today. Finishes with chewy, ripe tannins and a chocolatey quality. Another barrel destined for the Howell Mountain bottling: Complex aromas of black raspberry, violet, bitter chocolate, minerals and leather. Juicy and harmonious in the mouth; dense, broad and sweet, but also possesses good spine and verve. Ripe tannins spread out to cover the entire palate. This should be very strong for the vintage. (Dunn had 20% more crop in 2000 than in '99 but on my late winter tour the 2000 samples came across as sweeter, more harmonious and more complete.)
