Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named after the beautiful, large stones found in its unique wine-growing terroir. This exceptional ecosystem produces fine, elegant, tasty wines, with a long finish – in short, archetypal Saint-Julien wines. Perched on an exceptional site with incomparable views over the Gironde estuary, in the centre of a hundred-year-old park, Ducru-Beaucaillou is a majestic, Victorian-style castle, which has, over time, become one of the great symbols of the Médoc. Unusually for Bordeaux, it is built directly above the barrel cellars, enveloping its owners, who have lived here for over sixty years, in the sumptuous aromas of their wine. Today, the estate is managed by the company Jean Eugène Borie SA, which is owned by Mrs Borie, her daughter Sabine Coiffe and her son Bruno-Eugène, CEO since 2003, the third generation of the Borie family to head the estate. There are very close links between this estate and the five families who have been its successive owners. The estate’s history starts at the very beginning of the 13th century. Owned by the Bergeron family from 1720, the estate rapidly obtained a good reputation, in France and abroad: as early as this, visitors came from Scandinavia. The Municipal archives in Bordeaux dating from the French Revolution reveal that a sword and pistol were confiscated by the authorities from some Swedes, who were staying in the castle at the time. The estate was sold in 1795 to Bertrand Ducru who added his name to that of the castle, which then became known as “Ducru-Beaucaillou”. Ducru hired Parisian architect Paul Abadie to renovate the residence. The architect transformed it into a charterhouse in the Directoire style, adding a floor and an elegant façade which looks out over the eastern bank of the Gironde estuary, where, the intense 18th-century maritime traffic provided an animated show of sea-faring ships. This might be something to behold in the future, but for early consumption it doesn't show too much. Sampled over a 7 hour period. It was closed though out. For the first few hours there was virtually no nose, tight, shut down big time. Full bodied with dark cherry fruit and and rich chocolates. High level tannins that dried out my finish. Something to pack away for a decade or two and keep your fingers crossed.

Blackberry, currant and plum tart aromas lead to a full body, with a solid core of fruit, sweet fruit and silky tannins. Generous and round, with lovely richness for the vintage. Best after 2014.

At this early stage in its development, this wine shows more structure than richness. The tannins are fully developed, dark and dense. The complexity is there, but the fruit and the elegance are still to come andndash;andndash; and that suggests good aging potential.

Black in color, with aromas of blackberry, black licorice, tar, mineral and fresh flowers. Full-bodied and powerful, with ultrafine tannins that last for minutes on the palate. A polished, thought-provoking wine. Shows wonderful purity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2014.

Bright medium ruby. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of raspberry, currant, minerals, spices and cigar box. Sweet and densely packed; superripe yet fresh, with brisk acidity giving definition and lift to the lush but sappy flavors. Wonderfully seamless and fine. A big wine with noble building tannins and compelling lingering sweetness. This has the tannic spine and sheer concentration of material to age for three decades or more.

The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should keep for 30+ years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has produced an opaque bluish/ purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth. Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate’s 1855 classification. This enormously endowed, modern day classic is a legend in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2050+.

Quite dense, but pure and fresh, with the core of fig, damson plum and mulled cherry fruit already well-defined and the back end of rounded loam and roasted cedar grip fully integrated. The finish is long and powerful. Best from 2013 through 2020.

The reputation of fifth-growth Pontet-Canet has been improving in recent years. Owner Alfred Tesseron has worked tirelessly to better every aspect of grape growing and winemaking on the estate, from an entirely revamped drainage system throughout the nearly 200 acres of vineyards to unique, gravity-fed concrete vats in the cellar. His efforts particularly paid off with the 2005, the best-ever wine from the estate, giving substance to the claim that ldquo;Pontet-Canet is the fifth-growth chacirc;teau producing super-second-growth quality at half the price.rdquo;
