User Reviews for Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley Estate Grown
Add your reviewI'm usually a $12-$20 bottle guy, however, on one occasion (my 30th Bday) I did splurged and bought this awesome 2004 Duckhorn Merlot. It left was such a memorable, lasting flavor.
Bright ruby color. A slightly hot nose but floral and very fruity and well blended. The palate is powerful, but mellow. Bright red fruits, raspberries and strawberries and well integrated oak. Smooth medium finish.
90% merlot. Cherry and leather on the nose with a touch of hot alcohol. Delicately floral, concentrated, powerful yet not overpowering. Tart tannins on the finish, but drinking well otherwise. Earthier than many duckhorn wines with minerality and some cocoa scents. Paired with midnight moon cheese, which really brought out the sweetness in the oak.
This wine is the Duckhorn Red Wine. Even though the heading says Merlot, this wine is their Red Wine designation. It is a meritage. This is a big monster of a wine. Lots of leather and cedar. Tasted at 8 yeas old and still has life, although it is throwing sediment and is slightly past its prime. Drink up now! Noticeable tannin and dry feel. Loads of extract, long finish. My rating -- 92
By a longshot, this was the nicest merlot I've ever had. Strong, complex, nice caramel, maybe a little coffee, and beautiful a little fruit (plum?) on the back end. Wonderful stuff.

Complex, rich and creamy, with well-defined red currant and black cherry fruit that's shaded by mocha- and vanilla-laced oak. Finishes with chewy tannins and good length. May benefit from short-term cellaring. Drink now through 2011. 25,135 cases made.
Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 95 CELLAR SELECTIONAlmost entirely Merlot, with a few drops of other Bordeaux varieties, this Howell Mountain red screams for time in the cellar. The tannins bite and dog the mouth through the long, astringent finish. But chew on it for a while and you hit a deep core of blackberries and currants, and the more the wine warms up in the glass, the more impressive it gets. Cellar until 2010, and it should reward for years after.Wine Tasting NotesThis Napa Valley Red Wine reflects the power and intensity of its rugged, high elevation terroir, displaying excellent structure, strong tannins and a complex undercurrent of earthy minerality. Featuring extracted aromas of dark chocolate, mulled fruit and spice, this robust wine also offers savory hints of porcini and soy. On the palate, mouth-filling flavors of blackberry, black currant, mocha and menthol are accentuated by hints of lavender, graphite, herbs and sweet oak.
Howell Mountain in Napa is famous for its big, bold wines produced from the intense mountain fruit. Duckhorn purchased two vineyards in Howell Mountain and produces this rich age-worthy red from the low yield grapes. The wine is aged 20 months in new French oak barrels, and because the Howell Mountain fruit is so intense they allow this wine to age in the bottle a year longer than their other wines before release. Right now with nearly 3 years of bottle age, it’s shed much of its youthful tannin and is showing remarkably lithe and complex. Steve Heimoff in Wine Enthusiast Magazine tasted it in December 2008 and scored it 95 points saying “Almost entirely Merlot, with a few drops of other Bordeaux varieties, this Howell Mountain red screams for time in the cellar. The tannins bite and dog the mouth through the long, astringent finish. But chew on it for a while and you hit a deep core of blackberries and currants, and the more the wine warms up in the glass, the more impressive it gets. Cellar until 2010, and it should reward for years after.” This item excluded from XTYPAK and any other discounts or offers beyond the 15% case discount.
Winemaker's Notes:
Notes on the Duckhorn Napa Valley Merlot 2004 1.5 Liter : WINE ENTHUSIAST REVIEW: 90 POINTS A Cellar SelectionThere's a beautiful Merlot in here but you're going to have to paddle against the powerful tannins to find it. It brings to mind the old Duckhorn Three Palms Merlots, which were similarly tough and tannic in youth, but aged well. This wine is ripe in chocolate, blackberry, cassis, coconut macaroon and plum sauce flavors, but needs four or five years to begin to come around. S.H. (3/1/2007)WINEMAKER NOTES: Our Napa Valley Merlot is blended to offer the complexity and balance of a young wine, while embodying the diversity of the whole Napa Valley appellation. This wine is full-bodied with bright fruit and well-integrated tannins that lead to a lingering finish. The aroma is layered with raspberry and cherry, accented by notes of toasted oak, dried herbs, vanilla, and green olive. The flavors are ripe with blackberry and black cherry followed by spicy notes of clove, mint, and black pepper.DUCKHORN NAPA VALLEY MERLOT 2004 1.5 LITER
